Setting up the bator and setting shipped eggs this week....anyone else wanna join?

Wow, I've missed a lot of excitement around here!
Firstly congrats on the miracle chicks Gloria Jean! And happy chicklets to Vicki & Adjilee! I can't believe how big your chicks are already Justine!
I keep meaning to try the ferm. Feed, just need to get off lazy butt & give it a try! Thanks for the added incentive ladies!
Day seven today. One blood ring, 5 clear, 2 weird veining and 12 that look really good! I can deal with that:)
Frogsong, let us now how easy /hard it is to candle the Marans! I'd really like some BCMs! Maybe I'll find some at a swap... Take care all n' goodnight:)

Quote: For new chicks. 2 days before chicks are due,.....I take 1 cup non medicated chick starter and place it in 2 qt glass container, cover it with water and place a kitchen towel over that for three days. One day one of in the brooder, I use 1 table spoon of dry chick start and 1 tsp of FF and mix together. I sprinkle chick starter on the floor. Chicks are attracted to tapping noise. I tap the food dish with my finger and make mother hen noises. Same with the water. It does not take long. I probably do it 10 times the first day till i know every chick gets it.

Every three days I add 1/4 cup dry chick starter and 1/2 cup water to my glass container. I try to keep the same amount going. it is important to keep the feed covered in water. It grows lactobactic good bacteria. (The ferment) Your chicks will never get cocci. It elongates the intestines and makes it hard for worms to attach. It is a win win all the way around.

It is very easy to make.
Marans can be candled with two LED flashlights. One on each end.

Well home from the weekend away and 2 more chicks hatched while we were away so we have 4 barred rock babies that were hatched out of our own eggs after the shipped bantam eggs. So for the first go round of hatching with my daughter after not doing any for about 10-15 years I would say SUCCESS! And to top it off my daughter LOVED the experience. Not sure what the next hatching venture will be. Will try to post some baby pics tomorrow am tired after the busy weekend and ready for bed.

This means you need to order some Maran eggs...lol!!! I have one Welsummer pullet and I'm looking forward to getting a dark egg. She's just 4 weeks now. Hurry and grow up...lol!

How are those Catdance eggs doing?

Hahaha! I need to slow down - when everyone was in roosting tonight I thought...wow, where did all those chickens come from?

Maybe we will just all stay here for a long time - and when our hatched Catdance babies, marans, barred rocks , etc start laying, we can swap eggs and start it all again!!!

I am anxious to see how you like fermented feed! I am finding it a fantastic way to feed everyone so far! It is really facinating and makes so much sense!

Gallina, hang in with the wierd veining! I had 3 like that on day 7 - but when I checked them yesterday to relook - they were all moving around! I was very pleasantly suprised!

Delisha, do you do the ACV with mother to start the fermentation? I did that, and upon anothers suggestion a bit of dry baking yeast. It took a couple of days - but worked beautifully!

I do not use ACV in my FF to start. I let it ferment naturally. I add ACV in my water and drizzle it on top after they get a few weeks old. I started my FF a year ago. I added ACV then..I am still using the same container.
