Sexed chicks? & red sex link compatibility

Not all Welsummer chicks can be sexed by appearance, it depends on where you get them from. Older chicks that have feathers coming in, can be sexed based on the chest color.

The thing is, if you get one, even as an adult, your girls with both pick on her. If you get a single chick, there are extra lengths you have to go to in order to make sure she doesn't feel alone. That's why at least two is suggested.
 
Adding a single bird is a tough thing to do. Adding a single chick, would probably be a certain death to the chick. So one has the option of raising the chick for months alone.

Two birds would be a better add. Space inside the coop is an issue, people tend to think if they free range, they can cheat on space, but you really can't.

I would not add a silkie to your chickens, I don't think it would ever be a good flock dynamics, and a lot of bullying is what I would expect.
