Shadrach's Ex Battery and Rescued chickens thread.

@fluffycrow I'm so sorry. I can't imagine and I hope I will never have to deal with this. :hugs

@fuzzi , @MaryJanet , @notabitail , thank you.

@no fly zone , Skeksis was a very special bird. As ManueB said, I hope the bad dreams and sadness fade a bit, and are overtaken with happy memories of a very special girl.

@Molpet , I'm sorry you've been getting attacks as well. In my case, the fox came back the very next morning, but everyone was inside and safe.

@HiEverybirdy yes, Lady Gaga was a pretty special boy. He was the only rooster here (so far) that seemed to be interested in caring for chicks, and accepting them as his own. Even with juveniles, he seemed equally willing to watch out for them. All this started when he was just a cockerel himself, 6 months old if I'm not mistaken.

@Perris , thank you. I'm OK. This wasn't the first time I've lost birds to predators, and it certainly won't be the last. I'll miss Lady Gaga dearly, but so will Cruella. He was the first male she connected with, her previous one she wasn't a fan of. Erica's sister will surely miss her a lot. They were inseparable. Even when one was laying, the other one was always close.

@ManueB , people around day here do the same; shoot them, that is. I won't be doing that. I find it cruel, given that we were the ones that took their homes in the first place to make ours. The fox secured a few more days of life on this earth, even if it was at the expense of some of my chickens. For now everyone's in the coop, but I don't know for how long I will continue this. I'll try to think of a way to keep the fox out, and possibly let the birds out later in the day, and round them up earlier as well. I'm not sure if moving some things around will work for long; hunger does wonders to one's determination.

@lightm , thank you, and I hope you never do. It isn't an easy thing, although at the very least, I'm glad that the other 31 birds that were free ranging at the same time are still alive

Wednesday afternoon, around 5pm, we had a fox attack. Two birds taken. Erica, a young Tsouloufati hen, and Lady Gaga, the serama rooster. I thought that there was a third one gone, but I just didn't count correctly

All the birds have been inside for the last couple of days, not sure how much longer I should be keeping them inside; they're not happy to say the least.

Both Lady Gaga and Erica will be missed, Lady Gaga especially by me and all his hens. He was a really good boy. His whole group will surely miss him. Erica will be missed the most by her best friend and sister, those two were always together. She was an easy going girl, and a really good flier.

A sort of tax if you will, my favourite photo of each bird. View attachment 3939327Lady Gaga, posing with his daughters in the back. The splash girl I still have. She's the Ocean, the one who is co-mothering Ubon. View attachment 3939328Erica, this was a photo taken on her first birthday. She always liked to forage under shrubs
I’m so sorry to read this! :hugs

As the eggs are widely scattered and often on the poop trays - which are made of a much thinner plastic - I think I'll just wait till they hatch, and then cremate or powder them.
The little devils have been hatching while we've had days of downpours and weather I want to get out of as fast as possible, so I have just been squashing them with a thumb as and when seen. It's not going to eradicate them but another variety of holding operation until the hens stop laying (5 eggs again today) and I can jet wash the lot.

Red Mite free in the coop today.:celebrate A dry afternoon no less and I stripped the coop out and had a proper inspection. It's been a bad year for Red Mite here in the South West I am told. The mite arrived in one of the hot spells (for the UK:p) and arrived in force. It makes me wonder how exactly the mite arrive. To have a few and that population explode makes sense but in my case and for a couple of others I've spoken to, this year the mite seemed to arrive in a horde, or whatever the correct name is for lots of mites.

Chopped Brazil nuts have been part of my feeding stratagey for a while now. Surprisingly they all eat them. I think I'm correct in writing one Brazil nut will provide all and a bit of the metheionine needed by a human. There is of course a fat penalty but the fats are not trans fatsn or much in the way of saturated fats. I share three medium sized Brazil nuts two or three times a week.

This is Tull making sure there are no more bits of nut forthcoming.

Just happened to have the camera in my hand. Mow going to roost.

The rat guard covering the auto door crd seems to be working.

Fret. With her limp Fret knows she is more venerable than the others and her behaviour has changed as a result. Here she is under my chair close to dusk while the others haven#t made their way home yet. She did go to the compost heap today for a forage.:love
