It is sad it has to be this way (negative information about breeders). If it happens less than five times due to a very good reason or another, I would give them the benefit of the doubt. If it is repeatedly doing it again and again, that is what it is sad. I personally don't like doing it but PM would suffice enough to let each other know why they do not like or do like the breeder.
Shagbark Silkies at one time was very popular, not only with silkies but with other breeds like the Porcelain d'Uccles. Beautiful birds. My last email from them was roughly five to seven years ago and they did give their names and they were honest about their birds and their prices. Now I do not know what happened to them anymore so sometimes some popular breeders would be well adversized and slowly they would go down in an abyss with inferior birds. Most of the breeders were either too blind to see what they have or something threw their flock off a loop.

Hmmm...I know there is often times confusion over Shagbark Bantams (I think...in Illinois) which has a great reputation. I think if anyone is doing business, and money is being exchanged, the seller should be accountable for providing their name, at the very least, to the buyer. It just seems dishonest and sketchy otherwise.

Look,.. over the past couple years there have been silkies stolen from the PERSONAL private property of several silkie exhibitors. Shagbark exhibits, and they are simply trying to protect their stock from theft. unfortunate, but true.
I don't allow people to pick up birds on my farm either. They can see pictures of the parents or can see them at shows. I do have security, but for biosecurity, as tenuous as it is, and security against property theft/damage and liability (I have large animals) I don't allow people here. Period.
HOWEVER... I do use my name. In fact, I show my silkies under my real name, not under a business or barn name, my name. Not as marketable, but definitely not mistakable for another.

I have gotten hatching eggs from Shagbark twice. Once last summer and again a couple weeks ago. Last summer I hatched out a beautiful trio of whites, a buff pullet, and a beautiful splash pullet. I just hatched out 2 splash chicks about a week ago. I would order from them again no problem.
I don't do pick ups on hatching eggs, period. I will do pick ups on birds, but I meet them in the driveway and don't take anybody back by the pens, for biosecurity reasons, and also i'd rather not have strange people I don't know scoping out my birds/pens. With all these silkie thefts going on, I don't blame them for not wanting to give out their address, etc.
There are a lot of wacky sellers out there. It is true though that there have been birds stolen so I understand the not wanting to give out address but name is needed for a payment. I am always amazed on who the big sellers are sometimes. I look carefully at their pics and the few times I bought from E-bay i actually went to their feedback and e-mailed previous buyers to see how the hatches went and what the birds looked like. You would be surprised how many people leave good feedback after the eggs arrive or chicks and then once they have grown up the buyer is less than happy.

The OP thought it strange they don't provide an actual NAME for the seller! Even when they asked the seller for a name, they were not given one. (I know other people who have dealt with this "breeder" and have no idea to whom they are speaking to.) The OP's comment has nothing to do with not getting the seller's actual address, nor did they complain about meeting somewhere else. If your gut tells you a breeder or someone is "off"...always go with your gut!!! In this day and age I would NEVER meet a stranger without knowing their name and having a phone number to correspond with. It is just weird. Period.
Hi there is a person advertising Lavender silkie eggs and chicks for sale on Oviabid, Feathersite and and on a web site called Shagbark Silkies. (website is kinda strange) I have been in touch via email with this person but have no idea if its a man or woman as they never give their name. Also would only give me the zip of where they are located. Anyway they want a $50 dollar deposit on chicks ( which are $35 each!) and I only have a date of end of May. The zip provided is in Ohio. I live in Ohio as well and want to pick them up, but like alot of breeders they dont want people near the birds so they said they could meet me somewhere. Again I dont have a name. I have sent a email stateing before I send a deposit on paypal I want a invoice /reciept of what I paid for, what is owed, when I will take delivery. I also said I do not even have a name address or Phone number as its not even on their website...HAS anyone here on BYC done business whith Shagbark Silkies? I dont know if I am being overly cautious or not. Thanks
I wasn't saying they were right or wrong. I was saying that there are reasons why some people may not want to give address. I don't understand the name thing. Perhaps the seller prefers not to sell locally? If so, they should out and say it.
Regardless, I was just explaining why some people might be overly cautious about giving out their information as a seller.

I agree with you and your reasoning-I dont like folks coming over to my house either-I would prefer to meet them somewhere else for privacy's sake. I can't get past the name thing. If your name is out there-people remember names-reputations etc...I understand calling your business by a barn name but at least use a real name for business. It's when they go overboard for sketchy reasons that red flags pop up. To flat out refuse to leave names and avoid it at all costs?? Why??
