She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

A kitten got hit by truck at work last week, and I had to put it down. we aren't allowed to carry weapons at work, so I had to do it manually. I got a lot of grief from the more tenderhearted individuals in the office Who were going to "fix" it. The secretary told me I had no heart. I told her sometimes it takes more heart to put them down than it does to let them suffer and die on their own

Yes, it does.

DH just asked if I was ready to buy a farm.

So while I hate the idea of leaving our beautiful, beloved 1822 farmhouse, I really would like to have some acreage and room for a horse, a couple of beef, more turkeys and chickens, a couple of ducks...

After 30 minutes of searching I found the first viable candidate, about 30 miles away. Gonna try to take tomorrow afternoon off to go see it.

A creek runs through it, paved road frontage, some woods, some tilled fields, a couple of barns, rolling hills, a Victorian farmhouse with a wraparound porch...

As stupid as it sounds I need reliable cellular signal and high speed internet, those are requirements for my job. If I can get them, it will be a serious contender.

That sounds dreamy.

Remember that chick I was talking about taking, down at my neighbors, that had the eye infection but it was never treated? Well it was the same yesterday (just looked blind in the eye) and my neighbor is away, so I came to feed them. And this is what it looks like today! Do you think he/she is in pain??

Warning graphic picture****** (I'm on a mobile so I don't know how to do a spoiler)
*****graphic picture ahead....

My hearts breaking. I feel sick for this one. Suggestions??
Poor bird....I don't think that I like your landlord....

No, he will absolutely not put it down. He'll just let it live until it dies on its own. He makes fun of how I "baby" my animals. I keep reminding myself like someone else said "I don't buy the feed and I don't shovel their crap", so I have to try really hard not to over-step my boundaries when I go there. (Not that he shovels any crap or buys feed...he gets old bread from the bakery) ok I'm stopping now!!
You may not buy the feed.... but you have a heart and it's hard to see a defensless animal being treated bad or not being taken care of.

On a good note, I just sold 5 cockerels so I won't have to make them into soup. Selling as a batch was a great idea SC. Your target audience pulled through for me.

Congrats. That's how I've sold all of mine.

Actually, I do most of my shopping at Trader Joes. Sometimes I run into Sprouts because it's closer.
I won't go down that rathole either, but big ag has profits first and foremost, nothing else.

I know I'm miles behind but must comment Farmers do have profit in mind after all it is a business l. it's large seed company and chemist that have played wit the seed grains . of coarse looking for higher yields. among other things . I think non gmo is a rip off . simply because seeds will not form without pollinators that fly from plant to plant and field to field doing their job .I don't see how anyone can keep that from happening . there for how can it be truly non GMO you have to remember this all started many years ago . chemical fertilizer is by far the worst thing out there .it has been so over used that most soils will not produce crops without it .while conceived after WWII to give crops a boost by giving the micro nutrients in soil a boost. if a little is good then a lot is better . this has depleted the micro nutrients in the soil more or less making it totally dependent on chemical fertilizer . no till farming is another without chemicals crops will not grow . burn downs to plant . it just goes on and on some farmers are trying to change while others pour on the chemicals in one form or another.

That's exciting! I telecommute so cell and high speed internet is a must for me, too.

Yay!!! That's great!!! I have good news too. Someone contacted me by email and wants to buy some of my chickens too!! I had made a comment on the silkie association website a long time ago, leaving my email and asking for contact info for local breeders. This person saw my message and we started talking and now they want my birds!! I'm so excited, especially because I wasn't even trying yet, it just sorta happened!

That story could be much more graphic, and the secretary made me extremely angry. People think they are too kind to put an animal out of that suffering, but they are just making it easier on themselves.

Yes, so true!!! He has a dying, paralyzed chicken in a small bird cage. I asked what was going on and he just said "I'm waiting for it to die".

That sounds dreamy.

Exactly, Amy. Even if it was a wild animal, if it was laying there hurt, I would want to do something, one way or the other.

Ruby, don't forget to wash down the handle of your stroller... also, see if you could appeal to his pocketbook, maybe? Tell him the infection will spread to his other hens, lowering egg production and end up causing losses in hens... just a thought...

I'm all for farmers making a profit. I'm all for hybridizing and getting better plants with higher yields. If a bee takes pollen from one plant to another and the seeds change slightly, great. Inserting genes from one organism into another in a laboratory and artificially forcing something new that never could have happened in nature? Nope, that's over the line for me, forcing farmers to buy seeds year after year because it is patent infringement if you save seeds? Just sounds wrong to me,

I'm totally with you on the chemical fertilizers though.

Well...I can get Frontier DSL or Hughesnet. I can make that work as long as no one streams during my work day. As long as I have 4G LTE coverage I can have a redundant data connection.

I feel like a little kid at Christmas
