She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

We got our first covering of snow this morning....and the chickens are not liking it....lol They won't come out of their coops. Can't say I blame them....lol

No way! Really?! I'm not ready for snow!! All the water bowls were frozen this morning. And not just a thin layer on top like previous days. I got all the supplies together today to try and make a cookie tin heater. So that's my project for tomorrow! Stay warm!

Thanks.  Sounds like a good set up.  My hose bib is about 100' from my coop.  I could access warm water from the laundry room, again, about 100'.  I think I'll be ok with the 5 gal waterer, set up in the coop, and just refill with gallon jugs carried outside from kitchen.  That will free up the heated dog bowl for FF.  Win/win situation!  Any one know if it's an issue if heated dog bowls get empty?  Do they overheat, or does the heating element burn out faster if they are allowed to get empty.  I know I'm on the wrong thread.  Sorry for hijacking!

Never heard of issues about the heated dog nowls going dry... in fact, heard some just set small waterers inside the large dog bowls and use them that way... or filled with sand with waterer placed on top...

We sure did. Most of it is gone and the one run was pretty bare by this evening, but the other run is more sheltered from the sun so those guys never did come out I don't think...lol. Water wasn't frozen this morning. We have been having a little of the surface area freezing, but I find if I fill them at night so far, they don't freeze as fast. I don't want to think about what is going to happen when we get down below zero.

I just added my chicken eggs to the bator already going with duck eggs. One duck egg was clear, so that left 7 developing well. Added 7 lavender orpingtons, 7 silkie x frizzle bantam cochin, and 4 from my comet girls. Dark Brahma should be the dad, unless the EEs junk carried over this long lol. I think I'm most anxious about the silkie cross eggs! Most curious, I guess. Had several I couldn't fit in there, but oh well...
(LazyG - I did 3 round, 1 pointy mixed eggs, had to eliminate a round one due to space. The LO and silkie eggs are all kinda consistently oblong)

If you can, keep your gender stats and either post them on the "sexing eggs" or my "gender selection" thread. Hoping to get a lot of data from lots of folks to work with this spring.

Will do. It's not a great sampling, but I figure anything is worth noting. I didn't take pics of them, but I will whenever I candle them.

When I start setting again, since I'll be doing larger quantities of eggs under controlled conditions, I'll help with your data collection.

Hi Amy snow awesome I love snow . I had frozen facets this morning and it only got down to 25 last night . not supposed to be that cold tonight . I empty my water at night so I don't have to thaw it out in the morning .it makes for very cold fingers .
