She said/He said Who's right? Who's wrong? No one!

Sorry for your loss chicapee...

I recently saw the video of a lady sexing eggs with a needle and string.. lol

I just had one of my shipped eggs hatch about an hour ago...and my very first home-grown BCM chick

I had 5 shipped eggs make it to lockdown, 3 looked good, we'll see what happens.

Hey guys - I need some help! We recently caved in and agreed to let our daughter adopt a cat. Well this cat is an indoor/outdoor cat. (We are finding out more and more we do not like this cat in the house)
Anyway - He keeps going after my chickens! I'm afraid he's going to kill them. We could get rid of the cat, but my daughter busts out in tears if we even mention it. She's been waiting 3 years for a cat. I hate to think I can't free-range my chickens, they just enjoy it so much and I can't stand the cat in the house...

Anyone have any ideas for me? I wish my big roosters would put him in his place, but I don't want to risk their life. Stupid cat...

Get some one to hold the cat in a way that it can't move, then get someone else to grab a chook and hold it against the cat for a bit. Do that for a few days and the cat will stay clear of the chooks.

is this with different breeds? Different parents>

Yes., and yes, only thing the same across the problems is the water comes from the same area.

I had another pip this morning on the shipped eggs.. at the wrong end. So I just made sure the hole was big enough for the chick to get air and tipped that end up. I'll see how it's doing when I get home - may have to assist..

Thanks! I'll try anything.. I even thought about having it wear an E-collar and just give him a little juice whenever it goes after the chickens.

I don't know that my story will be very helpful but when I moved into this house it came with an indoor/outdoor cat that the previous tenants left behind. I was scared of him around the chickens because he would hunt mice and wild birds like crazy. But luckily it turned out that he loves the chickens and actually guards them. He chased a hawk out of the yard, all the way down the street. He will even sleep with them given the chance. It's so nice having a cat to look after them! Could you possibly trade the cat for a kitten or young cat that you could raise up with the chickens? Would your daughter go for that?
They were totally detached. And I showed Ravyn some pics because the eggs had these huge discolored spots on them and she said that's where the membrane separated from the shell. So they were really damaged. All I did was let them rest, pointy end down for 24 hours before setting. Then I set them in cut down cartons. Didn't turn the first 24 hours. The second day I tilted them at a 45 degree angle 3 times. On day 3 I started tilting them 5 times a day and that's what I'm doing still. They are still in the cartons and I will keep them in the cartons for now.
They are that bad, huh?! Oh boy!

Yes!!! We finally built them an outdoor pen. With a heat lamp. So now it won't be so bad and smelly!!! ;) :lau

?  if we were at the frog, I'd claim this window......

but seriously, what do you mean?

OMG!!!! That is hilaious!!! :lau. I meant ducklings.

Probably Duckling. :lau

Yep!!! ;)

I thought maybe it was an ill placed "L", or maybe replace the "ing" with a "y".......?

was lost.....

:gig. :lau

RIP Victoria.

Oh no!!!! :hugs

So a nice woman called me for some silkie chicks. She left a nice message and when I called her back to find out how many chicks she was interested in, she wouldn't give me a straight answer. Then she says she only wants female silkies. So I explain that silkies are difficult to sex but I can call her in a few months when my young ones are old enough to determine females from males. But she says no, that she only wants little chicks. So I tell her that I don't DNA test and that I do not know how to vent sex. And she says that I can easily tell the sex of chicks in a very non-invasive and free way. She would like me to get a needle and a string and hold the needle over the shoulders of my chicks. Keeping my hand perfectly still the needle will move in a circle if it's a girl and in a straight line of its a boy. She wants me to practice on my other pets and/or children and once I preform this method she will buy my female chicks. I'm not going to call her back, I'm afraid if I did do this and sold her sexed chicks she would be dropping off a few roosters on my door step in a few months! :gig

Well :smack her then. Lol!!!! What an idiot. :lau

Yes she had egg yolk peritonitis. Very sad.

:( :hugs

Remmeber the peacock man i met a
Few a months ago? He sexes with a needle and string like your customer wants! :lau claims that its the blood flow the needle becomes compassed to and a males blood flows up n down a females circular :lau

I say if she's crazy enough to believe the string thing, then no returns if it's wrong!

And yall should have started with ducklings. Chicks were sooo neat and tidy, after dealing with little wet, messy poop factories.
I had to pin a plastic table cloth to the wall in my kitchen because ducks can shoot poop like you can't imagine! :lau

Ha!! I can't believe this! People really go by this! :gig

By the way, I will be in charge of my neighbors pea eggs this spring (they have not started laying yet) but when they do lay I plan on selling them for him. I will not watch all those eggs get thrown out this year. So if anyone wants any let me know!

So will this be your first incubation? Have you read hatching 101? Shipped eggs are hard!! Are you familiar with candling? I'm not sure where to start with advice, lol. Do you need basic incubating advice or advice for shipped eggs? By the way, welcome to the thread!! :)
