Ok I think I got it now. So when putting them in an X on one side and O on the other. Books say small end slightly down, is this true for all eggs?

Just lay them on their sides... a slight tilt is a pain to do with that many eggs and I really don't see a difference anyways...

If you are laying them on their side you don't need to adjust the angle, that is the natural position.

The 10 day viable with good air cells rates were 84%, 94%, 84%, 95% (four different lots). The LG's hatch rate? Under 25%. I won't ever try to hatch turkeys in one of those things again, I had so many 104+ spikes that I am amazed any hatched.. Or anything else, for that matter.

its the same with the farm innovators heat spikes drive me crazy every incubation.

Ok so I bought a digital thermometer&humidity gauge. Digital is reading 101.3* & 30% RA, the thermometer I calibrated with my candy thermometer is reading 100.5*, the lid is reading 96* & 39% humidity. I dont have any water in there yet. Should I add a little water and see if the temp holds for an hour or two before adding the eggs?

Just be sure the temp has been stable for at least 12 hours before committing eggs. You may end up with temp creep, which could be lethal! I wouldn't bother to add water. You're in a good range with humidity, no matter which one you believe.

so as long as the temp is stable ,regardless of the humidity level, we can add the eggs?

I would leave it alone as long as it stays above 25% and only add water if the air cells grow too fast.

i think it was Ruby who was asking about blue and splash. This is a chart I got off the silkie thread.

Walnut, we got Corid. I put 2 tsp in a one gallon watered for the chicks. And I gave about 3/4 syringe of water/Corid to te three worse chicks.

Thank you so much!!! What I'm confused about now is the labeling on the eggs. Breeder clarified they are blue boy over splash girl. But then one says splash boy over blue girl. That would be the same outcome, right. I'm slow with genetics, so bare with me, I'm just trying to understand and learn!

Well I just went out to a sad sight.  While checking under Betty the Broody for stolen eggs, I found a little mummy.  Looks like it may have tried to pip, and then got shrink-wrapped in the external membrane,  A lot of the shell was off, but the white membrane was fused to the little body.  I peeled a bit, and the yolk sac was half absorbed. seemed to be in the right position though.

So I brought in the other egg, not sure if it was the "good egg" or "bad egg" and of course, it's all dark with an appropriate air cell.  No movement, no internal pip.  Decided to water candle before thinking about opening it, and nothing, until I went to reach to take it out and it twitched.

So I fired up the incubator, set it at 99.4 and 70% humidity.  Figured I would give it a day or three and see what happens, Betty can have the golf ball for now. I think it's day 19 today.

Sorry about the chick. I've never seen a true shrink wrap before. Doesn't sound like a pretty sight! Good luck on the egg! Will she get the baby back or be stuck with the golf ball? Lol!

Great hatch. I'm surprised by the after hatch deaths. None of my chicks have been friendly. Every time I reach in the brooder they act like I'm reaching for a chicken nugget to dip in sauce and eat in one bite.

I started asking shippers NOT to put any stickers on the box. I think that's why they get lost and some USPS employees have admited to throwing them out of spite. My 11 out of 14 hatch came from 1300 miles away and had no stickers. I read about the no sticker thing here on BYC and I will always go that route.

I read that too. Ruby - I don't know if anyone has collected statistics on it and I bet it varies from route to route.

I get after hatch deaths every once in a blue moon. The two that died were the smallest, so I don't know if it's genetic, or just not healthy. I'm hoping this next hatch goes a little better
ETA: Is your brooder elevated? I keep them on a table in the house brooder for the first few days, and the outside brooders are 3 ft off the ground. That, along with the plate heater, has really calmed the chicks down

Brooder is on the floor. I will try elevating it. I have used a light in the past, but I'm making a heat cave this go round.

Here he is with the Marans type overlay. He needs to fill out in the chest a bit it looks like.

He's looking really good! WIll be nice to see how he fills out and put me on your egg list for spring!
