So I found one of the broody's chicks dead this afternoon! I'm not sure why it died but I've been concerned that they are not eating and drinking enough. Mama always spills the food and fills the water with shavings. I took the other 3 babies away and put them in a brooder. I never see them eating. Will she be ok that I took her babies? Will the babies be ok? Should I just put her back with the flock? I don't know what to do! They are 2 & 1/2 weeks old and are extremely small for their age.

They are beautiful though.

You did the right thing... those babies are way too small for their age... put her back with the flock, she'll be fine... monitor them and get vites in their water...

Silkies are great broody setters, but honestly I've only had 2 that were good mommas... they tend to be clumsy and not as aware of issues as others... jmo...

Yes! That's what she was like. I put fresh food and water in with them like 5 times a day and she would just kick up shavings all over the chicks and the food and water! The little black one was kicked out of the nest area and dead only a few hours after I had checked on them. I moved her outside and she immediately went to dust bathing, like as if nothing happened. She kicked up a huge mess and I didn't care because the babies were inside. Thanks for the input. I felt bad taking them but they need food and water.

My #4 chick just hatched with virtually the same condition as the one that was looking for help the other day. It is a very small chick in a very large egg (olive with brown speckles) and the abdomen was very full on the chick. It hatched out trailing a full yolk sac and about 6" of intestine. I clipped the yolk sac at the junction and reinserted the intestines. The navel began to pull shut, so hopefully the chick will be able to retain it and I will dose with antibiotics tonight. I don't want to handle it now to reduce stress and a probable re-ejection. Let's see if it makes it.

#5 just popped.

Here's my mystery chick that hatched--I posted over on the breed page for ideas on what it might be. From a barnyard mix with a BCM roo over a bunch of breeds. Any ideas? We'll move it to the brooder tomorrow morning probably. I'm still hopeful the other egg will hatch, but it's too dark to tell. I'm giving it until friday (day 25).

And I'm picking up some eggs from my grandma's goat milk friend's neighbor to try it again! This is rather addicting....





And feathers on the feet! What kind of chick has feathers?

Silkies, cochins, brahmas, favarolles, are some of the common feather footed chickens.

That is a bummer Walnut.

We lock down 39 mixed breed eggs last night. I tried something a little different with his hatch. I ran the temperature a little hotter closer to 101 or 102, instead of 99 to 100. Still air. Humidity seems to of been my biggest issue this hatch. We would have wins off the gulf, for a couple days at a time. Then we would have a cold front, and it would dry the air out again.
