Shell less duck egg with broken yolk next to it

Tonight was success and an epic fail:celebrate:he
I came home relooked at some videos, just to make sure I wasn't gonna choke the out... prep all the meds and get my game plan in place. Bundle up and head out to the pen. Gave some watermelon with no meds in it, seen that they were taking to the watermelon. Popped the pills in some watermelon and all went well. Everyone took their pills. :celebrate Then I gave the liquid meds and they gave a little bit of a fight but it all was good! I gave some mealworms for being so good!

They were really quite while I was cleaning their pen, just sitting outside with their feet tucked in. After I cleaned their pen I just sat and watched them, they both seemed tired but she was really looking tired, she kinda just sat there with her beak on the cement. Not tucked in her side like normal. I grab the mealworms and headed to the pen (they hear that bag and normally come running). I sat in the pen and shocked the bag and kept calling them. Finally they came to the pen door and sat down. I could see Ted but I couldn't see her. I kept calling and finally she came into the pen, shook her head back and forth a couple times and flew a piece of watermelon! Holy crap!!! I got up to check it as I knew it was goons be the piece that held the pill....yup! It was. I walk out the pen and she threw up everything. Whole pieces watermelon, whole meal worms and her liquid meds too, I'm guessing! :he

What did I do wrong? To much food in a short time? Do the meds not agree with her? Am I doing this right? WTH???

Might've been too much food too quickly, too much excitement with/directly after food, etc... I would concentrate on trying to get the meds down without food... then food a bit afterwards...

Hang in there... :hugs

That's what the hubby said. I think I might have made the watermelon chunks to big too..... I shall try again in the morning. So close yet so far!!!

I can't remember what all pills the ducks are being given, and this may not be an good option, but could the pills be broken/crushed/etc? Then sprinkled on some feed or treats?

I haven't had to give a bird a pill yet. I was scared to death to tube feed or give meds by syringe, but once I learned how (thanks to casportpony and Ravyn), it's so much easier than it seems. Kinda like that first push on a bicycle after training wheel removal. :D
