Well my phone has been acting up too!!! Finally gave up waiting for it to behave via the mobile app and I'm now on thru safari. No difference I guess just more inconvenient.

Very busy here! I put an extra roost in the big coop so the girls would have more room.

Started staining boards for the permanent run so it's coming along!!! Can't wait!!!

Sad news... When I pulled up to the house on Sat a hawk flew out of the bushes... I knew that could only mean one thing so I sent hubby to look. Sure enough there was a dead chicken. One of my Olive egger teenagers. There was another's chicken hiding in the vicinity but was ok. All others were accounted for.

They were so freaked out. They stayed in the coop and under the coop all day yesterday and didn't venture out (I kept the smaller teenagers locked up yesterday and today). Finally today they ventured out.

Haven't seen the hawk again but I'm sure he's out there. My dad saw it too and said it was a Cooper's hawk. Ugghhh.. Tho I wasn't as upset as when the dogs attacked. The dogs was a senseless kill as they were just playing. This seemed much more "circle of life". Tho I am still sad. Trying to make a decision on free ranging vs confinement. They just love being out and about. I guess it'll depend on what happens over the next few days. They have plenty of hiding spaces. To get away.

Right now I have about a dozen spare eggs and have decided to try freezing them. I am going to try some whole and some mixed. DH says that it will not taste good as his family had done so decades ago. Anyone have experience with freezing eggs??
i have froze i mix them with little milk and in bags works great for eggs in cakes or anything i have never done whole eggs. i do this every winter for the last 5 yrs just like canning or freezing veg it works great for me and hubbie. i will but 4 eggs in one bag.

I have another question for a friend. She got 3 hens about 5 weeks ago. The seller told her that they hatched in January. One is a Wyandotte, one RIR and one?? The Wyandotte laid for her from day one until the family dog got her. She is okay and laid 3 more eggs and then quit. The other 2 have not laid one single egg yet. The hens used to free range and are now in a 4x6 pen, but are let out for a couple of hours a day. She says that there is no evidence of molting. Any opinions as to why they might not be laying?? She is on a limited income and chickens were supposed to earn their keep. She loves the hens, but they are not providing eggs.

they maybe laying when free rangeing tell her to look around the yard for eggs.

Hey Everyone! I've had some crazy days... 2 fires caused some of it... one had called other fire companies for help and the carrier in Prattsville is the fire chief, so he had to go. so I did my route, and zipped over and did his, but his is almost 9 hours. granted, I didn't have to sort, so that saved about 90 minutes... the second fire just caused all kinds of delays and detours. then there was an accident on one of my roads while I was traveling it and they were having a knockdown brawl when I pulled up. ugh. this resulted in yet another carrier, who is a local judge... being called in to officiate, so I had to go and do his route...
today was announced as the last summer-like day so I really needed to get home. I kept my fingers crossed for no issues, just run to the DMV to renew the reg for my car, grab some coffee creamer at the mini-mart... and get back for some free range! it was an awesome afternoon, mostly spent relaxing and really watching them, rather than photographing them. hard to pass up some of those moments, but still... it was so nice to just watch. then, when it was time to head in, I opened the door for the 3 new girls. the last thing I do is count the Dome members, so I don't lock their door until I do so. anyway, I left enough of a gap for Brutus to slip out. I think he's in love. I really didn't want them mixing yet, but really... it shouldn't be too much of a problem. everyone is and has been healthy, the spot where these girls came from is so similar to home... earth makeup-wise... same bacteria in the soil... and Brutus came from that same place (as did Dutch, my Marans and my Cochins) Brutus was being very delicate, moving slowly, not scaring her, didn't try to mount her or anything so brash... but... sorry bud, she's for Tommy, and you can have Esther and the other 2 new girls who have no names.

1 Egg today
