Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

Ughhh happy New Year's Eve huh?? That sucks cheeka!

Got the chicken run up. Now to just cut the hole so they can get in and overlay w hardware cloth. I'll probably finish just in time for it to be the whopping 5 degrees!!!

Cheeka, sorry that you got stuck..... again.... Maybe next year will be better!

I think I got 6 eggs today... maybe 7. I know for sure that there wasn't a blue one.... and none with any blue food coloring either....

It has been CRAZY around here today... and not in a good way. Well, actually it was a pretty decent day up until 3pm, then all H*LL broke loose! The new has worn off with the puppy, so now no one wants to watch him or take him out.... He has pottied all over everything, including the couch and the Christmas tree skirt! UGH!!!!!

We have been trying to get the driveway fixed so that we can have the gravel brought. Unfortunately, no one wants to help out... We both have family with tractors, but no one seems to be able to come down for about 4 hours worth of work. Yet when they need something I'm supposed to be all happy to oblige! Sorry... Rant over....

lindz... it's never easy, puppyhood is such a long period of time too... the next 2 1/2 years should be fun.

Chester is making incredible strides in becoming the Beagle/Hound that he was meant to be. I had him out day before yesterday during free range, OFF the leash. it was only a very few minutes, but he heeled! the chickens are still wary of him, which is smart, but he ignores them. he sits, gives paw, responds to No for excessive barking, will lie down on command, loves to roll over, but won't do it on command yet. he doesn't jump on people anymore, knows what "down" means. he still steals my food if i'm not diligent about it, gets into the trash once in a while...

37 seconds of additional daylight today - 41 seconds added tomorrow... we're already up 4 whole minutes since the solstice and it's having a profound affect!
I got 4 Eggs today! 3 blue and Veronica's brown. she's a great layer, I think she's part leghorn, judging from her white feathers, her body shape and her comb. she's got a floppy Leghorn comb. but she's got fabulous cheek muffs and beard. One of the eggs might have been from 20 month old Isis, looks like hers... and the other 2 are from 13 month old girls.
no Marans eggs today, but yesterday, Cosette laid, and now I know that hers is the dark egg with the many little speckles, which would make the dark egg with the big speckles Genvieve's.
can't remember if I mentioned it here, or just on FB, but bantam Marans Esther, who is 5.5+ months old, squatted for bantam RIR cockerel Red the other day during free range! he's such a handsome fellow and a superb dancer...! she let him mount her, and I could see that her vent is dark pink and healthy. I expect her first egg within 2-3 weeks.

my dinner can't cook fast enough! smells so good in here it's driving me bonkers! need a hearty meal and a good night sleep. I have been forewarned - Ms So and So is calling in sick tomorrow. she's not sick. she just wants a day off. we have no coverage. so I'm left holding the (mail) bag.

You will be buried in eggs soon, and probably a few chicks too!
UGh.. So sorry to hear that, the person is sounding like a slacker.

Oh noo... now its your puppy. I know how that goes, my automatic response to any new pet is NO! screamed loudly!!!!
Rant away!!! We are in that boat with family too of late.
We have quit being the "do-ers" for a certain brother of mine and its funny.. He shows up a lot less often.
If he calls and asks now, DH says, "well, if you come help me do X, that will free up my time to help you!"
Its very frustrating, as I get older I have a LOT less patience on that issue!

Sounds like he was the perfect fit! I bet with time he will have perfect manners.

UGh..... on top of everything else I think we have mites or lice (not sure which)! Snickers had a dirty bottom this morning which is unusual, so I picked her up to check her vent. Sure enough there were little creepy crawlies there and white eggs on her feathers! UGH!!!!

I am trying to do things more naturally without using a bunch of chemicals. I have so much to do right now that I really didn't need to add treating the chickens for anything to it! Oh well... joys of having them I guess! I picked up a few more of them and didn't see any on them, but I will be doing a more detailed inspection tonight when they are on the roost. I am going to be burning some wood today so I can dust them all really good in the ash tomorrow while hubby is home to help with the kids ect.

My first pip, ever!!!!

Sorry, just very excited.

on the little chicken buggies. Let us know if the wood ash works. I had heard of it, but was afraid to use it because wet ash/lime/acid concerns. Maybe you are getting all of your frustrations packed into the end of this year so that next year will just be awesome!
