Should I buy eggs or wait it out?

the RIR egg (#3) is pipped! egg #1 hasn't yet, but it's chirping... Peach is extra puffed up, and she let the chick peek out at me. so, I scooped it up, it has clean legs, so I don't think that Archie is the sire, it's probably Royce, Sirus doesn't get too much action... too cute when I put it back down, it nudged at Mama, she lifted, it scooted... back into the fluffy dark warmth...

updates later on! it's 40*, crystal clear blue sky, sunshine... I have to go outside to shift some snow, so the gangs can have some range time!
I was thinking the down on that chick looked more gray than black, so Archie makes sense as the papa. Are feathered legs dominant? I know the blue egg gene is, so maybe you'll end up with a blue barred EE. That would be really cool.

Does the chick have puffy cheeks?

No body sitting yet...still have snow on the ground! Today is warm through, in the fifties, so maybe finally spring is here! Last year they did start early, weaned early at five weeks and sat again. Cutest little things those chicks! Course they could be hiding from me somewhere.
The only way our farm chickens could ever have chicks is by hiding. We would always collect the eggs because my mom didn't want to deal with the roosters. We'd be so surprised when a hen showed up in the yard with her little fluffies. So many predators around, we never expected them to survive the 21 days.

feathered feet is dominant, the offspring would have less feathering if only one parent has it. the chick is silvery, might be Si's... he does get some...

it's still so little, bitty egg tooth still attached, but no sign of feathering on the feet, and I think I need to wait a week to see if those fluffy cheeks are muffs and a beard... it's darned cute, the spot on the head is diffuse, rather than precise. it's probably a cockerel

well.... the RIR egg isn't pipped after all... it was a bit of straw, it's all shadowy underneath her. I haven't seen her up off the nest since yesterday. but when she let the chick underneath, I did get a good look at the eggs, she's still sitting on them, and I do hear faint chirping beneath the much louder chirping of the hatched chick. I'm hopeful... and honestly, surprised that even the one hatched.
maybe tomorrow... I read about the assisted hatch, really don't want to interfere, especially not too soon. it can still take another day or two on it's own.

I waited on mine too. One didn't make it out and i felt so horribly guilty for not helping.. But, one of the 2 i helped didn't thrive and passed on the 3rd day. the third is a fiesty lively baby... of course those 3 were spike's eggs, all 3! The main thing with the help seems to be tiny steps. I had no bleeds (OMG i would have cried) and I did tiny pieces until the chick could get out. I didn't remove membrane just shell. cotton swabs soaked in boiled water under a heat lamp cause our humidity is terribly low here.. so unnerving! all 3 pipped the wrong end. ugh! Spike is a nutcase hen to begin with so I blame her

her eggs are rounded, so i am guessing i picked the wrong end when i set them. I now have hubbys micrometer to prevent that! Its hard to know unless you have set date marked down.. and then u still can't really be sure. I keep a spreadsheet since I am doing goose eggs too. right now, i have 64 birds, and 90+ in the incubators

I have lost my mind i swear!

Quote: The incubators are on sale. And I bet you still have electric outlets just sitting there not being used. It is Spring. They are soooo cute. Everybody will want to buy them. You can sell the eggs. Free range them and the feed bill is nothing. Stop counting. They are called a "flock" for a reason.

Unbelieveable......can anybody explain to me how Roger understands daylight savings time and has started the "peacock treat scream" a hour earlier this morning?
