It is a shame that it got to this point. Can't blame you for protecting your flock. Sad that the owners of the Huskies don't care for those dogs in the right way. That .22 will cripple them unless you make a excellent shot at a moving target. Be prepared to look them in the eye at close range and finish the job. I have done that with deer and it is not easy. Buckshot would not cripple. I support you. But I also warn you of the possibilities. Again you are a great friend. Just know what you might be faced with. Only trying to help you friend. You have my support whatever you do.

22 eggs yesterday!

Johnny went out with his girls yesterday like nothing happened and roosted with the rest of the flock last nite. Now I have a sick chicken. She is wheezing and coughing. I separated her from everyone and I am treating her with VetRx and some antibiotics. She really isn't eating or drinking much. I will be filling the eyedropper frequently to keep her hydrated. And then, while I was cleaning the coop this morning, I noticed blood on the floor. Not poop, blood. I couldn't have been from Johnny because he didn't sleep there the night he got beat up. So, I found my pure white Marans looking like a white copper Marans with the layer of blood around her neck. Looks like someone roughed up her wattles and they were bleeding. She doesn't seem to notice anything. I will clean her up tonite when I bring them in. If it isn't one thing, it's another!

Oh boy, a bit of trouble in chicken paradise. Regarding the wheezing and coughing, check out Denagard. It's for swine in the US but in Europe they use it for chickens as well. Goes in the drinking water and is good for mycoplasma infections that frequently cause respiratory problems. Not exactly swine country around here so I had to mail order it. People also use Oxine to kill fungi and viruses. Haven't tried this one yet. Hope your antibiotics work. The sad thing is she has probably been sick for quite awhile, but it is part of the Bird Code to mask all illnesses and injuries. By the time we see it, they are often pretty bad.

As for the bloody chicken, what's up with that?! Are they just getting the spring jitters? Lately I notice several of my hens going after the lowest in the pecking order for no real reason, just for the heck of it. Poor Poppy and Dash. Luckily they are usually out in the yard and can easily get away from the meanies. Setting up some extra roosts (or a big log or ladder) can provide a way for them to escape/evade. Changing up the coop/run in any way (extra food/water dish, hanging cabbage, swing, treatball) will provide a distraction for everyone and may alleviate the attacks.

Short of that, perhaps the blood thirsty brutes are craving extra protein? A little calf manna or good quality cat kibble will solve that easy, and you get bigger eggs as a bonus.

Hope they start behaving themselves.

it was a crappy weather day here, I ended up not letting the flock out... kept hemmin' and hawin' over the skies and chill, then it started to rain. I still feel bad tho', I know they want to go out regardless... good comes around tho' - I brought a trunk load of scrap meat, organs and bones to the wildlife refuge for all the carnivores, and in totally unrelated return, I got a huge bag of just out of date cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, apples, potatoes and a big box of wheat cereal delivered from a friend who gets all the out of date stuff from several markets and bakeries. so, I'll make a huge apple/veg salad for them tomorrow, with cereal croutons. the taters are perfect. them's fer me.

it's raining ice pellets, the front steps are crusted and treacherous. getting Ruby out to do her business was the tricky part

Sully, that respiratory problem needs to be treated flock wide IMHO... just because only one is symptomatic... I've gone through my first round of respiratory illness last Autumn. 2 had bubbly eye/s, 1 was coughing/sneezing for a total of 3 sick birds. got the Denagard, treated all, and it worked. you can also use Tetroxy HCA-280 Soluble Powder antibiotic if you can't find Denagard. goes in the water. very easy. I treated the whole flock just in case.

I am sure you can handle the situation. Just hope you don't have to. I guess what I am saying is I would rather see a bigger gun or a lesser gun. Overkill or stinging from buckshot. A in between gun possibly creates a situation that anybody with a heart does not want to be in. I remember those situations when I had to finish a wounded animal while deer hunting. You don't forget it....or at least I didn't. Shooting a moving dog with a .22 is a high probability of a wounded animal. You cannot hunt deer with a .22 in Kentucky for that reason. I don't think any state allows hunting deer with a .22. However it is your property, your chickens, and your right. I'm just sharing my experience. I love the fact that you own a gun and know how to use it. You are a awesome mother who I respect for your attitude to protect what is dear to you. Good luck with finding a resolution to your problem.

Thanks for the info W4W and Cheeka. Of course I have another one with the same sounding wheezing, and this one has the bubbly eyes. i will be looking for the Denagard ASAP! Do you know off hand if you have to hold back on the eggs and for how long?? (not that either of those two are laying, but for treating the rest of the flock)

It snowed here again last night. I'm so over it.

Chicks are doing great. I was out of town all day so I saw them once in the morning and then not again til 9 pm. Amazingly they changed even in that short time. Some of them sprouted tail feathers. Totally adorable!
