Shout out to Los Angeles

Hello Everyone in the Los Angeles area. I am in Orange County, starting my flock next month. I am thinking day old chicks are the way to go. I know of the feed store is in Malibu, any suggestions for a little farther south? In Orange County maybe?

Hi all. Posting from Glendale CA. Have been dreaming of chickens : ) for some time now and am glad to find a community of the like-minded, right here in L.A. Have been educating myself & this site is a find.

First problem has been where to get chicks. Does the place you guys refer to at PCH & Topanga Canyon have a name? I'd like to call 'em up before I drive over there.

Any other L.A. favorite places to get lovely chicks or is the general consensus that it's safer to order them? I noticed nearly every kind of chick was sold out on MacMurray's site very recently. Very disappointing.

Still learning,
Can't wait,
Sugarbeth

Hi SugarBeth,

The store on Topanga Canyon and PCH is called Malibu Feed.

But, I have been in contact with MyPetChicken.com and feel they have a nice selection of chicks.

Have you decided wether or not to go with started pullets or with day old chicks?

If you are purchasing 25 or more, then McMurray Hatchery has a nice selection. Their minimum order is a little too large for me, I want to start with a small flock of 5 maybe. I think I will be getting 2 New Hampshire Reds and 3 Delewares. I have decided on the day old chicks, even though they will be more work.

My flock should be started by the end of the month.

Good luck to you.

Mike

Hi Mike, and thanks much for the info.

I'd heard good things about MacMurray of course but they were sold out of individual chicks across the board as far as I could tell, and I'm not quite ready for 25. (I hope you will keep us posted on how that goes!)

As a newbie (though my dad was raised with chickens & has been very excited and supportive in this venture) I thought I might start with 2 or 3 chicks, and I had decided to go with chicks as opposed to pullets because all the sites & blogs i've seen say that the chickens get very bonded to you if you get them as babies (which has certainly been my experience with cats & dogs). Though I will look forward to the eggs, it's important to me to have a close relationship with the chickens, as I do with my other pets.

Wait... did that come out funny?
You know what I mean.

I recently got two chicks from Agoura Feed in Agoura Hills. They are about 6 weeks old now and seem very healthy. When I was there, the only animals Agoura Feed was selling were day-old chicks, which made me feel more confident that they were disease-free. I'd call them up and see what they've got. Agoura Hills is a bit of a drive, but on the weekend you can just shoot up the 101 and be there pretty quickly.

I don NOT recommend Blacksmith's Corner in Bellflower, although they sell a lot of poultry. I got a chicken from them once and it came with a respiratory disease.

thanks much for the tip re: Agoura Feed, I will check it out. Took a trip to Malibu Feed Store yesterday, some beautiful pullets there, maybe 6 or 7 weeks old.
Very much enjoyed the greenFrieda blog as well, lots of great info & loved the pictures.

I am east of L.A. in Claremont but grew up in Monrovia (alittle closer). When I lived there we got our chicks from Wes's in El Monte and Kruse's in South El Monte. I would not recommend getting adults from Wes's (bad experiences), but chicks from either did great for me in the past. Now I get my chicks from Pomona feed and fuel. Alot of the local feed shops buy chicks at various times throughout the season, so it is always best to call around and see what they have at the time. If you ask, sometimes feed stores will actually add a specific breed into an order if their supplier has it available.
