If you saw the rest of the coop, you might not want my help. It is mostly a mess. My photos are always carefully staged.

Mine? The slightly lower one on the left of the photo has a ton of clearance for my poop scooper. I think the roost is something like 10 inches high? The higher/newer roost and board has almost exactly the right clearance to use the scooper under the roost. Something like 5 or 6 inches. I actually forgot to ensure there was enough clearance when I was making the second one. But I ended up super lucky that the clearance was just barely enough.

I have about 8" off clearance only (minus the 3/4" or so of sand) in my setup and I make do with a kitty litter scoop just fine. Removable roasts are certainly easier though. I read just considering adding some blocks of wood as 'brackets' and removing the screws that hold my lower roost in place so I can lift it in and out off place for even easier cleaning.

I want to to see pictures of your poop boards! That's right, boards that catch poop under your roost. Pics and descriptions like measurements or comments on litter material (sand, shavings, clay litter, etc). I am looking for inspiration here.

Here's our poop board in western Connecticut. We have 10 girls (Buff Orpington and Easter Eggers. This was from June 2018 - our first flock. They all made it through the winter fine, unheated, but they have an LED light and heated water bucket with horizontal nipples. Happy with this design. We use sweet PDZ and scoop with a kitty litter scoop and empty into the compost bins in their run.

I shared this picture early in this discussion but it would take a lot of time to go through each comment. The length of the long board is 7'. I painted the plywood it is made out of and covered it with clear vinyl carpet runner (at the time Lowes had it in their carpet area). I faithfully scrape it off with a dust pan into a bucket and do a quick wipe with diluted bleach water from a spray bottle and a rinsed out rag. Not much mess on the floor to clean up and I can keep an eye on my hens poop. The bucket of poop goes out to the compost pile. Coop smells fresh all the time. I have had this set up about 4 months and I have 19 hens.
