Youngest birds I have are 3 months and that's pushing it around here I think. Supposed to drop to about 28 this weekend. Thankfully it hasnt been that cold so far.

One of our first steps into chicken husbandry was to acquire this lovely lady and the 9 chicks she was still raising at that time. We named her "Cruella" (yes, like the Disney villain), because she was so ferocious (she has wicked spurs!). Possibly she had been used to breed game cocks for fighting? (

).

I would like to know, just out of curiosity... IS she a specific breed, and/or coloration? Thanks!!

Here's mama with her latest batch of little fuzz-balls (minus a few tail feathers, from defending a predator attack!!):

And yes, she's much, MUCH tamer now:

The color of the hen is referred to as a buttermilk grey, as for as the bloodline, the person that that you got her from would be your only hope of knowing that.

Yes she's a grey hen (grey is not gray. Males are like yellow. Just go to google and write grey gamefowl and a bunch of pics will pop out. And like my friend said before is hard to tell the breed. But its a grey american game.

Thanks for the helpful and speedy replies!

Yep, a quick "Google Images" search showed a bunch of gals that look just like her.

So "Grey American Gamefowl Hen" is the appropriate phrasing? I've always felt odd calling her a "Game Hen" (as the feminine of Game Cock), since to me "game hen" is those little Cornish things you bake in clay... LOL!
