Natural selection.. which ever ones the dogs dont eat :) haha jk

I like to pick the larger/heavier ones.

Also, when the stags start play fighting, see who runs and see who stays.

For the pullets I look for the ones that get to the food first. Throw down some treats and see which ones are hot on it.

I also do a bucket test for intelligence... put feed in a bucket so the pullets can see it, but cannot reach the scratch. The smart hens will jump into the bucket, the rest will keep walking in circles around it.
Thanks Shubin!

I know what you mean on the stags. I like to see the young stags that will drop a wing and shuffle up to a hen. They may regret it, but it tells me they are full of themselves at a young age.

Your bucket test is interesting. Most games seem to be a little smarter than the average chicken. My wife commented the other day how "slow" mentally, our layer pullets seem to be. Lol

So the bird you found dead in the feed bucket was a keeper?

The slow part is the difference in select breeding vs. concentration on egg laying and mass production

Oh my god! I just pulled in the driveway and they all came running. Evidently they know where the food is.

I usually don't take that into account but I suppose being alive would be on the upper end of qualifications
