You can pick up the nest box or bucket and set it inside the barrel, or when catching up new stags and pullets, use them as holding pens. I don't use them, I see the advantage of housing them in less area, I want mine on the ground.
I think you missed a "cant" or "dont" on that last sentence...

I like the setup but I wouldnt want to use it for keeping anything longer than a week. Only birds ready to sell and/or quarantine for sick ones.

Man I'd have them working all breeding season in a setup like that. Put some clay kitty litter in it and scoop once a day or so. Broodies only gonna get off the nest to relieve their self anyway

I don't care for housing them in a plastic container, on my yard they will be able to scratch in the dirt if they want to

I've had a bunch of hens hatch chicks right on the ground. Some hens I let out while others are just too aggressive. The chicks came and went as they pleased. I've only lost 3. One disappeared the other 2 wandered into the wrong pens. I think it's better for them to be on the ground from the get go. I do use medicated starter though and have never had a chick with cocci. I have corid but it's unopened and I've never needed it. I just mix the medicated feed with yard feed until I have all yard feed after a few weeks.

Pretty sure everybody's yard is different and has different requirements. Especially when it comes to soil type, drainage, etc..

What's a few more? I'm already killing myself every day. Might as well be doing something worthwhile.
