This past spring I let a black/grey pullet set on a few eggs. She did fine for about a month then she started stepping on them I guess. Two chicks were limping one day. I watched her close and she was practically ignoring them. I let her out of the pen figuring she would come back at dark but nope she was done after 4 weeks.

Yea if something happens to another one I'll take them from her cause these are full blood standard spangled old English game and the father to them died and he was the last rooster I have of that kind now I just have two spangled hens and one of the two hens is the one that has the chicks right now she has 12 maybe at Least one will be a rooster
She hatched all them chicks herself? You could always take a few to cut down the work load for her and see if that helps.

It always interesting letting the hens raise chicks. I have a hen that kept her chicks until they were almost 5 months old or so. She did a great job of keeping 2 stags from going at it. Most quit way before that. I've noticed once a hen decides she's done with em though you gotta separate them otherwise she'll start getting rough with em. Obviously hens are usually better than pullets.

Yes sir, very true. I can remember a couple pullets that were exceptional, but it's rare. I had a 6 month old pullet adopt a batch of chicks a couple years ago.

These are Chet pullets that are cousins

They are definitely some beautiful pullets, thanks for sharing.

Yeah she hatched all 12 herself she was setting on 17 eggs she hatched 13 but one died and there was one trying to hatch after she left the nest I put it under another hen

She has a good bit of room the worst thing is all the scratching she is doing I'm scared she's gonna burry them all alive its her first time hatching out chicks
If she is nervous or scared they tend to scratch and act hyper which tends to hurt the chicks... Giving her space where she feels safe is best bet. Some feel safe in free range, others feel safe in broodbox area.... Having other chickens around is not good and will make mother hens nervous..

if its her first yera she may be be super nervous...

also having lots of chicks (13) is nerve recking also... I usually take away all but 2-4 chicks which makes things easier.. they tend to survive better when they have more attention from mother hen anyways.
