3rd hatching, caught the cat with one of them in her mouth. She's dang good at killing mice and other pests but I can't have her killing my dang chicks.

Could be motherly instinct if it's a female cat.
Bullsh*t it's predatory instinct. Cats are killing machines. I've got a bunch running around. Newly hatched chicks and their peeping draw the cats attention. They are about the same size as a song bird.
I've only lost one pullet to a cat this summer. Never seen the cat before I found him eating my pullet. I think that cat would have made a different choice if he had a do over.

I've watched the cats closely while I've had hens with chicks loose. I've had the cross hairs on a few cats while they were getting a little too close. Never had a problem with the cats that grew up around here just have to watch for any new ones that show up.

One second later this pullet pecked the cat on the top of his head. Half the time I have to stop the birds from beating up the cats lol

Cats are weird around here. They disappear and show up years later happened twice. First was can all black went missing and showed up a couple yrs later. Reason we know it's the same cat is cause she got it from the shelter and when they found it it had a collar that was around its neck and one shoulder and the skin was starting to grow around it so since they cut it out the cat has a bald spot where the collar was. No fur grows. 2nd time was a couple yrs ago we had a flash flood and a different cat went missing. About a mo ago we heard cats fighting outside my wife says some cats been coming around at night and fighting with another stray that's been hanging around says she's been shooing it away its dark can't see nothing, I go outside to see and it's her cat that disappeared during the flood. She been shooing away her own cat. The cat it has been fighting with I took him in he's cool none of them mess with the chickens and all are fixed. Brought them ourselves. Shot one one time and it ran across the yard cleared the ditch and dropped in the middle of the street right when it was time for school buses to pass I hurried and pushed it into the ditch
