If you don't manage the predators then who will? If you stay on top of the food chain long enough then soon or later there's no food left.
Nature has been handling that naturally for the past 2-3 billion years... balance of predator and prey (low prey, predators start starving or producing less offspring, and vice versa when predators are low, prey can repopulate)... At no point in history did every prey go extinct.

Take a minute to apply that concept to the human predator (top of the food chain) and what we are doing to the food chain...

Shubin you need to realize a lot of damage has already been done. Encroaching on existing habitat with fancy housing would be a place to start worrying about. The fact is that animals and human conflicts is inevitable with the available land. There just isn't enough land to let certain populations of predators go unchecked.

If you want to go back in history, man has been managing predators for thousands of years. SMH

Shubin your a professional thinker. That just don't get it done. There's a video somewhere online of a coyote that just killed a bunch of mice and left them. Red foxes and mink will cache food and then half of it will go bad. Weasels will kill everything in sight. Your logic in general sucks. How the h*ll do you know what went extinct 2-3 billion years ago. Read that in a book. Armchair quarterback. Nobody really knows it's all guesswork. Dinosaurs, chickens, woolly mammoths come on.

I am guessing there are far more humans hunting prey than wolves and cougars. 1000 years ago those numbers would have been flipped. Now humans have hunted and decimated the entire world and even led many to animals extinctions or the brink of it.

Luckily we put programs in place to stop the slaughter. Lets keep these important safe guards in place, and to hunt responsibly which I am sure you guys do.

Cats will kill for the h*ll of it? What's your opinion on that? Your dog has killed more this year than I have in the past 5 years.

Homo sapiens is extirpating predator and prey species at an accelerating rate. Food webs are getting simpler and less stable. Management now needed to stabilize much of what is less. I hunt. Hunting pressure is getting too high even though per capita take is very low. Habitat loss is far more problematic in some places. Habitat loss is increasingly due to climate change. Invasive exotics greatly complicating the whole mess.

Time to leave some areas untouched and possibly time to reverse some savanah ape encroachment.
