Probably because of the group breeding that hatcheries set up. Seem like only the most aggressive would end up actually breeding the hens while running off the lesser more docile roosters. Not exactly a trait that's desired in layers. The cheapest way to get numbers of chicks though.
Sperm competition too. Sometimes you do not have to be the toughest, just leave about the mostest. Kinda like jack salmon or sneaker bluegill, or the teenage kid you think just mows your lawn.

Favorite hens is what it is with DP fowl. My 2 new hampshire cocks favor the few ameraucana hens in my laying flock. They tread them all day long even when there are plenty of other hens and pullets. I'm not sure if Games have favorite hens or not, but do seem to be more "gentlemenly" when it comes to dealing with the ladies.

The culling of unwanted cockerels is for several reasons. The DP birds don't forage as well as games. No sense in feeding cockerels that aren't going to be used as breeders. The meat is better when young as well. I like my New Hampshires because they grow quickly and are ready to eat from 16-20 weeks. I also have a good perspective of which ones stay for breeding and which ones don't by that time.

Housing. Most people only have one coop. 20+ cockerels running around the laying coop is something the behold. Few people have 1 or more grow out pens and are usually the better breeders.

That's interesting. I've pulled one rooster for another and collected eggs. Wrote down dates etc.. using a grey rooster as a test. The second egg was fertile from the new rooster. Other times is can take much longer. Nothing is set in stone. Genetics, colors, taking solely after the hen etc.. maybe a good rule of thumb but Mother Nature has her own set of rules.

I sure hope all these fools keep going watching football games on Sundays. Please do not take trumps advice. I enjoy my sundays wandering the woods in peace and quiet.
