Once it gets cold the birds will eat all the boss and corn first then the millet then the oats and pellets. Summertime the corn is last to go usually. They know what they need imo.
On nights when it is supposed to be really cold, I will give them whole corn just before the go up to roost. Maybe it makes me feel better knowing them have some slow burning fuel in them for the night.

All of mine averages $16 something a bag except my super scratch is $14 something. The super scratch has all the grains that's in my other feed except for the pellets and oyster shell. You can go to your local feed store and probably find a good game feed from a list of feed offered from his suppliers.

Do you guys put out the whole grain feeds for the chicks to?
I usually have a hen in there with the chicks. I put some in the feed cup where the chicks can't reach it. When they're ready the hen will get it out of the cups and onto the ground for them. Just chicks I don't give them scratch til I turn them loose usually.

Both these birds are of different families and in the same broodpen. Looking forward to their results!

I won't give anything but starter to them until they are 4-5 weeks old, then that's very little. Most of the free range hens will have them eating it earlier. They need to be fed some chick grit
