Maybe another way to look at it is cracked or ground corn has more nutrients available to animal and is easier to digest.

I disagree because if a chicken that's 8+weeks old can't eat whole corn and picks threw it's feed will be culled on the spot. Sickness is different depending on the sickness, bird, and many other factors

You beat me to it! Corn is a good feed component, but there is a reason ground or pelleted feeds are used.
