Caroteniods / vitamin A. I work with animals routinely that can have low hatch rates when egg yolks are yellow rather than the ideal orange to orange-red color. My assumption is the chickens may have similar issues when diet is dominated by grains. The pepper does appear to enhance appetite.
Centra, fresh peppers such as bell peppers have a higher Vit. A content, but ground black pepper does not seem to have a lot of Vit. A. I think the person said the hen was molting. Molting will allow for some rest/recharging and then she should come back into production assuming everything else is in order. A good pelleted feed will go a long way in bringing her back into condition/production.

Hey flypen so someone I know took a ride to Mr Larry's this past Sunday and didn't come home empty handed.

I should have clarified on what I call pepper. Cayenne, chili and paprika are what I intended. Versus black pepper which we seldom use in our household. I also use ground with a little oil added to enhance uptake of the carotenoids.

With hens currently in molt that I am trying to get hatching eggs, they are babied to get them through two competing process that both have increased demands for protein. A problem I have noticed with hens so pushed is that tail feathers currently coming in will be replaced in their entirety in another 60 days or less.

My soaked oats are kept out of the sun for 3 days, a half full 5 gal bucket will almost double when soaked. I add one cup of red cell for extra vitamins and iron, stir it once a day
