I dont have any Lakenvelders (yet)... but the Modern game cross seems to working out good so far. I will know more as he reaches full maturity.

The Modern Gamecock I did have (RIP) passed away fighting for his life.  So I think he was game despite the accepted belief that Modern Games are no longer game.

I believe that gameness is trait that can be passed on, just like other traits (toppy, leg color, etc.). The more I breed towards the American Game side the better chances of breeding true games and not dunghills. Just need to select for color and gameness in the case of the Lakenvelder Game crosses.

In the case of Moderns I was trying to select for long legs, but the only cross that survived (white rooster I post) ended up with standard length legs. But I think I can remedy by breeding him back to his mother.. and taking their offspring and breeding towards American again.

For me its all about experimenting and having fun with it. If I get a few dunghills I can always cull them from breeding program.
yup I agree nothing wrong with a little exsperimenting.my big project in the future is to make a family of fowl that can survive in the wild, and prosper.
I want to cross american and oriental games and possibly add some red jungle fowl also.

I think about that more than anything.. I want a breed specific for ferel populations. That was my entire goal when I first started, which is why I kept all my games free range. I even took a dozen and dropped them off at the local riverbed, hoping that some will survive and breed.
My visits to the site showed signs of 2 dead chickens. That was 3 years ago.

Hasn't that been done. Practically what most American gamefowl already are.

Truly not trying to argue but it seems as though some want to go backwards. Human beings domesticated the chicken and now you want them to be wild. I don't quite understand. There are wild jungle fowl ya know. Releasing a Pomeranian into the woods don't make it a wolf.

Shubin why games? Why not just mess around with other breeds. There are plenty that do well free range. I once had a hamburg hen that I never touched after the day I let her outside. She lasted a few years before something got her. She slept probably 75 -100 ft up in the trees. She could fly easily was always on my roof and would fly off all the way to the trees in the back yard.
