oh, I waited till she left the nest with her chicks. She's a b**** from hell anyway when she hatches off some biddies, don't get me wrong I like her, she'll protect her little ones against anything. I just Hate Spurred hens!
I bet. I had to move her cause I have a few hens that run around the yard that recently started hanging out with the gamefowl. I was afraid if the chicks slipped out of the wire of the pen the other hens might mess with the chicks, where the mama can't defend em.

Interesting, I do something similar and use a few older hens as my broodies.  They receive extra care attention and plenty of treats.  It amazes me how much the chicks respond to the behavior of the mother.  If she is calm and trusting of me, then her chicks are too for the most part as there are always exceptions.  I have found it helps if the hens have dominant personalities too as the chicks pickup on this and benefit from it with interactions with other birds.

Dominant personalities seems to be almost the rule for game hens I mess with. The calmness provides a little more leverage for directing where they are when I am out there. They do not avoid me although they will still come to me which can be problematic as they cross their little territory boundaries.

When the birds are calm it opens doors for getting them to do things outside confinement. I can get broodcocks to walk between breeding pens without having to actually catch them. Reward for such behavior food and girlfriend they have not seen for a while. Having birds move voluntarily makes for a much quieter yard

I have several hens just like the one narragansett1 is talking about, one of them just came off a nest hatching 6 of 8 eggs this morning. I decided to get the other 2 eggs out of her nest after she moved off, she decided that I was a threat to the other chicks. I hate spurred hens! Then in another 15'x 20' pen I had to move and doctor up 2 baby stags from a battle royal this morning.

good luck with the hens i have 4 murphy hens with spurs very good mothers but im making night moves from now on....
