For future reference its gamefowl not gamebird. Gamebirds are hunted like pheasants, quail, chukar etc. Just so you know

I was just out sitting around the fire pit with my wife discussing keepers and birds that I'm gonna have to let go. It's not easy especially when I'll be getting rid of birds I deemed keepers last year. Just gotta go with your gut along with a few tests I suppose. I would rather give most away. I don't particurly like culling birds that don't really have anything wrong with them.

Oh good I was right on my understanding of station and it is not the weird leg length thing I ran across recently but the actual body angle to leg placement I was thinking in the first place. I will endeavor to be less lax with my wording too. I am not sure physically which station is best or rather how it effects what the bird can do or makes things easier or harder for a bird to do. But I am thinking it does help or hinder different aspects of movement.

I've been trying to digest it all... a lot of variety in game fowl breeds because it seems to me different conditions they where bred to perform in effects physique. I think as every country seems to have had preferences in how birds where competed for centuries or changed over the centuries so that seems to result in a sort of not just behavior style but physical preferences as well. Just my thoughts after reading many different explanations of what is traditional in X, Y or Z local. Just a thought on how different the evolutionary pressure was in many places from what I can tell.

I have to say I find them all amazing, at some point I will have to commit to a "breed"... but it is hard to choose even with drastic differences between say Asian breeds and Western breeds.

That all seems understandable to me.

there are reasons why someone would want a certain station.
Also wanted to say thanks in asking questions and trying to get to know what you're getting into if you decide to raise some because the management is different from other chickens. There's the whole housing side of them too.

As for station it is about how the body sits on top the legs. Leg length technically has nothing to do with it its just that the higher station birds usually have longer legs. The type of competition for lack of an uncensored word dictates which station is preferred.

Havoc how many do you need to get off if? That's the difficult part choosing who goes and who stays. I think Lmljsl may be having the same issue lol. It's hard y'all but gotta be done or we'd all have a zillion chickens. I know I would but it's for the greater good

Yep, they are some nice birds, but can't keep them all. SDM, I think you said you cook them and it sounds like Havoc gives them away. I have not eaten any of the gamefowl, but am getting close to it this year. For me, the trouble with giving them away is that most people don't have the setup to handle gamefowl and I feel like I would be setting up a poor situation for the fowl and the owners by giving them away, if that makes sense.

I realize they all have their place, but I am partial to the medium to high station birds. They are just a proud sight to see standing out in the yard.

Me too I favor med hi, to hi.
And yes I agree with everything u said. I do butcher some but most I gift but luckily they go to people familiar with games. Some like pullets have gone to people's aunts or grandparents that just want to watch chickens in their yard with their morning coffee. Most butchering is done in the fall when they got some size and its one here and there. The kelso pullets that were picked up yesterday are gonna be solely used for Broody hens. I try to make sure whatever I get rid of has a purpose whatever it may be not just "well here you go" without knowing cause then problems can happen.
