All I can usually find round here are jumper crosses or greys or crosses of crosses etc, figured I'd ask.

if I were you I would start with a few cheap crosses or whatever get to know how to keep them and learn all u can and with experience you'll learn where to get quality birds cause more likely than not the first birds u buy won't be all that great cause u don't know what u looking at. Nothing personal just a lil advise. Inexperienced people can get taken quick in this game

OH none taken I'm here to learn. I have my production type birds but will most likely as you said either get "mutts" or do research before I buy or both haha. They will go in my free range flock anyway till I get femilar with games and make breeding pens for them like I do my other breeds. I appreciate the input, one more question anywhere inpetecicular besides here to learn more about games and what to look for?

Depends on what kind of cold your talking about. Main thing is keeping the wind off em when it drops way down. Break ice every day and make sure they get some "water" not snow. All American games are hardy enough to deal with most temp extremes as long as they are fed well, and hydrated (just as important in winter). In winter I feed them more corn, and extra on really cold days just before bed.

A lot of mine would rather die than let me catch them (running into fences, flying 10ft in the air, etc)... but they definitely dont fear other roosters...

I think raising free range without handling produces fear of man... They act like I'm a predator if I go to pick one up. 

With a little practice you can tame even free-range birds although process will be slower. Work on getting them to come in for food, then get them to eat from hand, then work on getting them to allow you to touch them. From there you work on getting them to perch on you. I have a couple stags never penned that will try to crowd me from the feed mixing bowl. They are pushing five months could have been doing it younger if worked.


You can take a really wild cock and tame him down in a couple weeks following a more regimented procedure. That what we used to with stags harvested from walks.

You can also botch things up with penned birds. There is technique to process. Can be good, bad and in between.

Thanks, but some of the best looking birds I have are a little on the wild side. Enough to be annoying at least. Some of the better rubles I have are rough as hell looking until 6 months or so but the majority are much more calm and more than likely overall better birds.
