Someone said they had toppies....would love to see pictures. Can one of you historians share some history on toppies? Was someone specifically breeding for that trait, or does it just occur in certain lines?

Could be half game. You can make something that is a dead ringer for that colorwise by making a first generation cross between something based on extended black where either parent is black like a Java. Another way I do it is by breeding hen of either American Dominique or Barred Plymouth Rock to a game. All females will come out close to solid black as you have there. Male siblings will all be barred but roughly same color as their mother rather than light like the barred breed male.

I am dangerous with the phone camera. Tried too hard to get good angle and layed back into hotwire. Not a good zap but made me move.

Hen they are out of is a Jim Almond Toppy that I am pretty sure is wheaton colored with blue legs. Cock is white muff based on looks. I thought the muff was dominant like the toppy but need to look further into that. As chicks I would have no trouble discerning these from mine so having makings for creating a good broody line. They cockout around 4 lbs 6 oz if memory serves.

A half-brother had pink legs so lots of variation to fall out when bred to one of mine. I am trying to see if they have a pure toppy stag left, if yes then a road trip likely to be soon.

As tails fill out I do not think they will look so black as secondaries will be lighter. To my eyes they look very blanched wheaton. A little red bleeds through on both but camera did not pick it up well. Looking closer at them I can see the muff showing a little. They are still striking sight.

The source is reputable. I visited with him about five years ago. At the time he had pure toppys which I was interested in but was not yet ready to take on. The owner is in poor health. I met his sons at the Jacobs Cave animal swap. Only to venders had games at all. Another had a cock that was very long in legs, high stationed and I bet better than 6 lbs.
