i don't hunt them much because the season runs at the same time it's best for trout fishing. I usually pick fishing over turkey hunting. Plus I'm not that good of a turkey hunter.
It looks like they just come to you. lol

@lmljsl

Yes, he must carry alleles at the loci involved.

Elevated levels of testosterone I think would should up in aggressiveness in hens. To my eye, spurred hens no more aggressive than non-spurred counterparts. Evidence for that is that when kept together as groups where fighting is of short duration and low intensity for rank, having spurs seems to have no impact on placement in hierarchy. Where spurs do have an impact is when hens that do not know each other or a broody is involved, then the bird on receiving end of spurs gets dinged up quickly although gameness makes so outcomes of such scrap comes down to more than just who has spurs. I think non-game hens could be whipped quicker by those with spurs.

Something that might be real. You do not want to be a juvenile or chick on receiving end of those spurs. Those spurred hens may be causing some of the mortalities, even when victim can run a bit after struck.

2 yrs ago. I counted 71 birds in my yard at one time. I couldn't believe how many. They just kept filing out of the woods one right after the other. There was only about 25 or so today.

Pretty cool to see. We have some big flocks around here that group up in the winter. A couple of years ago I had to stop and watch as a big flock, all evenly spaced, with their heads down slowly walked across a corn field. I talked the farmer later and he said ODNR counted just shy of 300 birds in that flock. Apparently they can do a lot of damage with all of their scratching. They have really made a comeback in our area. It is strange to see them hit alongside the road just like all of the deer.

One May I saw this hen coming out of the wheat field, so I did my best turkey call. To my surprise, I must have sounded okay. She walked over and I picked her up for a pic.

I have picked up hens like that as well. Maybe when they are looking for that special tom they will give anyone a shot.

Every fall they do this. They come in from one side of the yard. Wander all around go across the street and then come back across the street and roost up in the trees right near my 3 coops. Not sure what they are doing the grass is all but dead in most spots.
