I edited more than I should so will clarify. I do not want him to display to me. Displaying to me is a signal giving by a man-fighter. If man-fighting is the default interaction without something I have done to promote, then off with his head. What I think is going on is that many fanciers of games take into account looks in a way that is impacted by the bird' s behavior. A displaying bird is prettier. It is hard to separate looks in the process to select breeders. I have seen time and time again where the observer treats the aggression directed at him / her as gameness.
I don't think anybody here is treating aggression toward humans as gameness. You've said that like 50 times now. Nobody is doing that. I've culled a few otherwise great stags for just that. One was hard to do but I'm not dealing with them when same nest brothers are perfectly fine. A lot of pics I take a bird will show a little agression while in his pen, like pecking. Fine in hand and doesn't come after me when picking him up.

I don't have to explain to nobody but gonna anyway. This ******* kelso I have is the last of his specific blood around here that I know of he is game and I need him as a broodcock. I also wouldn't deal with real bad manfighters but I have no choice. People have their reasons for doing things and if they want to, go ahead I know the difference in mean and gameness it just so happens he gots boff

That straight comb stag is the last one I got Lmljsl and if he's like his brother was he'll be a contender. I also have his parents so I'll definitely be breeding them up in the spring
He looks nice, I was just teasing about the stance. lol

Okay, I like the males that show a little confidence as opposed to running to the other side of the pen. As Havoc wrote, a little attitude in the pen is okay, but once I put my hand in to pick him up, I do not want it bloodied.

It's the quite and stoic one's that you gotta watch. lol I am not as fast as them.

So if a stag is dropping his wing and trying to push himself sideways through the wire and kicking dirt up all over when I crouch down by him is that ok.

The running to far side of pen for me is not an indicator of being a man-fighter, or not. The bird is simply scared and trying keep distance. That means he needs a little taming so he stops associating you with discomfort.

My preference is to not have to always keep an eye on the bird when working around him. I like to concentrate on applying correct amount of feed or servicing pen or checking for health issues that might impact behavior only slightly but be masked by a bird that has attitude. I also have a lacking speed issue, especially when crouched down collecting egg or focusing on something being written down. Many of my birds that are not handled frequently will bite when first picked up but they settle down after a minute of two.

I have never had one launch a sneak attack, never. They are very honest in their signalling even though they may not give you the lateral display or raise their hackles. We just need to be aware of that signalling and not treat it as something that is not important like watching water boil.

In addition to the Kentucky Dom, he has golden dom (Crele) and grey dom (I think base black lacking red rather than actual silver / gray allele).
