I moved my pens into a location with much better wind protection that has been planned for almost a decade. Back in 2008 I planted about 20 bamboo cutting in a row on the N side of cockyard. This year the row closed with bamboo pushing 15' tall. I lined up about 2/3 of my smaller pens immediately to south of the bamboo. I am a little leary because that is area through which raccoon when have not been able to catch comes from. Otherwise location provides excellent N wind block. Bamboo currently in place not native. Native stuff will be planted in other locations.


As I moved pens, birds were released to speed process. There were some fighting issues that helped recapture most although the majority of hens / pullets I had to catch off the roost. A couple pullets tried to fight cocks through pens. Every last one moved into a Bradford Pair that was loaded with thorns. All the birds where really flighty, as in flew up into tree and other locations trying to find that special place to roost. They were not avoiding me. One of the cocks even crowed while in the air which I do not recall ever witnessing before. Will kill that Bradford Pear for the third time today.

Diagram of mess. Most of you likely have more pens that are organized more tightly. I move my pens about and free-range young birds a lot. My ground is also not as flat as I would like it.

Outer perimeter of hotwire is bounded on both sides by closely mowed strips so I can walk about cleanly. That also appears important for predators to respect hotwire.

I've had roosters crow in hand but i don't think I've ever seen/heard a mid flight crow...

Penned roasters do get really excited when set free and tend to do random hyper things before thinking about it.
