Dude if you are not going to kill it I suggest driving it far away to release, like. 30 minute drive at least.

I generally do not kill snakes, even the poisonous snakes. My dogs kill enough of those and snapping turtles without my help. Losses to snakes pretty light. That snake clearly looking for mice. I put an egg in front of and it simply crawled past even though in hunting mode.

Missouri Department of Conservation has one recommended I want to try. Fox will likely be killed anyway. Otherwise sets will be active only while I am home.

I just read the PDF. They did a pretty good job on that. I don't like deer stops because I have lost a few fox and coyotes I've had by the leg. However I've been snaring/trapping for the past 15 yrs and I've only had to release one deer. They have stepped into hundreds though. Never got one by the leg. That deer stop does work. If you do it buy them already premade and loaded to close quickly. I can make them but there's a learning curve to get them to close quickly and smoothly.

Thanks for the insight. Deer should not be an issue as dogs keeping them out very well. Fox has to trot or even run through. Same fox works neighbors chickens and ducks hard but just passes through on us and does not go to where chickens are.

Notice on that study they did with the restraints they didn't have much info about gray fox. They are difficult to snare. I had one I am not kidding had to shrink the loop size down to 4 inches across to catch him. I was not confident in a loop that small but over many misses I just kept shrinking it til I got him. Lol
Best part about snares is you can leave em out and just close the loop down and hang it off to the side until your ready to go again. I close all mine down on Christmas. One day reprieve is all they get.

Technically I'll typically close em on Christmas Eve morning and reset em on dec 26th morning. To improve my image I do let all young raccoons and beavers go. Also anything with screwed up fur I'll turn loose as long as it's healthy.

Skin them, flesh the hide, hang the pelt on a stretcher or tack beavers to a board to dry. Sell the fur. Doesn't everybody?

I tried to get a bullstag up for photo's to show his eclipse feathers. He had not been out of pen for a while, like at least 60 days. As I reset pen for his return, he hustled over to fight another bird. His path was going down fence. He got zapped every other step. He kept is composure and setup to scrap he got hit a few more times before backing across fence getting zapped again. He walked around a bit before trying to fight another across the fence and got popped some more. Think he had enough I tried to pick him up, and darn it, he started walking along with his leg in contact with fence again. He got popped a few more times before squawking and flying up and into some heavy bush about 60 feet away. He has not come out after two hours. A bad day for him.
