I think their is interchangeable use of fat and obese here. Then I would start thinking in terms of condition factor. Condition factor varies a lot with breeding cycle, preparation for long distance migration and even preparation for winter like you see with raccoons and white-tailed deer in more northerly locals.

Raccoons and migrating ducks are great examples. Could be my terrible shooting but late season mallards require an rpg to bring down.
