Old school brooders were galvanized during my first go round with chickens. Early 90s ish. Total guess but approximately 6’x6’x10” tall but only one side was sheet metal the other sides was a few wires running horizontally with feed and water trays and a split top with slide out vents. Used them for chickens and pheasants. Wire was too wide for jap quail
You pretty much described the one they had in Mexico lol exept with wooden panels.

Keep em with the hen. Why wouldn’t you? You think you can do better than her?
Can't with the way I'm group breeding.
Other hens aren't fond of the little ones they didn't hatch themselves. I learned that the first year. Would find hens pecking chicks, dead chicks, lost too many that first year. I can see how it's more manageable in a single mate situation.
Im considering getting a hen in there to keep the chicks in line, but I dont know how she will treat other chicks.

Oh yeah. That group breeding stuff doesn’t even cross my mind. I want to know exactly where they came from.

@Texicano why do you need to group breed anyway? I’m not knocking you. Just wondering why you wouldn’t want to make sure you liked the offspring from the hens before you put them all together. Ex; you end up with 20% of chicks that aren’t up to par for one reason or another. Wouldn’t you want know where they came from, especially if they were only coming from say 1 or 2 hens? Cheaper to cull those 1-2 hens then raise up 20% known culls year after year.

They still make them out of metal as they are easy to clean and sanitize.

I see what you're saying. Later in the future I will eventually single mate breed, but for now I'm just following My mentors instructions. We cleared the whole yard of the Radios from last year for a reason. This year, mostly all of them went out the door when they were barely pidgeon sized (thank God since I wouldn't have had enough pens or space) I only kept two for myself...and well you already know what happened to one of those two lol

But I completely agree with you that Single Mating is the way to go hands down.

The way I do things it’s easier for me to do totes and straw. A tote per clutch but they don’t stay but a day or two. If I want to keep some for myself it’s not many and I’ve put ones together a week or two apart with no problems. After a week old they go outside to the above the ground cages each stall is 3x3

Interesting discussion... some day I plan to build something.

Update Fishing Licenses acquired... happy dance.

Got hubby two baby chicks & one for me nothing exciting all Cochin... they were out of the breeds I wanted, but decided to get a third for giggles. Never raised feathered legged birds before... should be interesting.

We are brooding them the same as previous chicks in the shower. The shower is set up to be our brooder.

Someday I will have game fowl... someday. Sigh.
