Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I haven't heard back but that's fine cuz I'll have to wait til March to order if I do. Money's just too tight right now. DD just got a job thank the Lord. This economy is tough even if you do have an income because there are those who don't, and need some help. I just learned a friend lost his job with the power company after 30 years.

Take care,

Rancher

Harter is not planning to start shipping chicks until mid March, so you could get on his waiting list.

For those who have his Dels, are you seeing any brassiness? I checked out the photos of his breeding birds on FB. The rooster has quite a bit of yellowing. It could be dirt but it looks like it may be brassiness.

It would be really nice to know the pros & cons of each strain, so you can make a more informed decision on where to buy your breeding birds.

I finally bought the SOP and it arrived yesterday. I admit, I should have bought it a long time ago!

I was disappointed in one thing, though. Since I've seen the beautiful Schilling illustrations of the Delaware here and on the Club website, I expected (and was looking forward) to see them in the SOP, along with all the other breeds. The colored artwork of the breeds doesn't give you as much of a feel for the perfect fowl, as those old black & whites.

So, where can I find copies of the Schilling illustrations of the Delaware? Is there a list somewhere of all the breeds he did over the years?

I am having that problem with my harter birds. They are great birds to start with, but I do have the yellowing. I posted this a few weeks ago but didn't get a response:

While I am very happy with the birds, I have a lot of work to do with my Delawares before they would be considered anywhere close to SOP. I know that body/shape is where I have to begin, but I am curious as to whether everyone else is having problems with yellowing feathers in the roosters of this breed. I first believed it was a feed/environment issue with my birds, but as they age...and after talking to Walt at Crossroads...I am beginning to think that it is another color trying to pull through. So, does one look at something like that this early in the game...or do I still wait to paint until after I get the "barn built"?

Tim was specifically looking for meaty Delawares, so his slant was for that aspect of the breed, more than the "look" of them, which is why I recommended them. I have seen some yellowing in some of the pics, but not knowing what Harter feeds them, it was hard to say what the cause was. I know know that my Dels (not Harter stock) do not have the yellowing issue at all and they are three years old next month. My line, which originated from Janet Holtman, is very hefty. They may not appear as huge as some of Harter's birds at first glance, thought they do have good type, but they are extremely dense and heavy when you pick them up.

What do you mean by "another color trying to pull through" ?

How difficult is it to breed the yellowing out of your flock? How dominant is whatever causes it, if it's not feed related?

Michael, I do not have that yellowing in my Delawares.I kept a few Harter pullets (no males) and they don't have it either.

I uploaded an album of pictures of my F2s (project Delaware). If you are interested, they are here....

I have 2 pens of them, and I have a male in each pen that I am liking, so far....

Kathy those boys have wonderful chests and tail angle. Also their tail barring is very crisp and cleaner than anything I've seen before. I just love the barred buffy pullets, they are cute. Congratulations on your success, you have worked hard for it.
