Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

I am looking for delaware chicks to pick up in the southeast. I do not have resources to hatch at this time. I am looking for 25 chicks or so and am willing to work with smaller batches of chicks throughout the summer. I'm located in Clemson SC.

My goals are apparently uncommon. I am working with an organic rancher to start a poultry operation - this is a business and we are ultimately aiming for a net financial gain. I understand that we are going to have to put money out there at the outset, make mistakes and learn some lessons. Here is what we need:

  • True dual purpose - males fill out well and females lay well
  • Males at suitable table weight by 6 months
  • Females good to very good layers
  • Slight tendency toward broodiness/some hens will set
  • "barnyard smarts" - these will be pastured birds.

I believe Delawares should be a suitable breed. I have also considered barred rocks, australorps and wyandottes. Any recommendations or leads would be greatly appreciated.

Delas are awsum for this but if you want a larger carcass weight at butcher cross them to BR's mine last year out grew my dels by a good measure, at 18 and 22 weeks when we butchered they out weighed my Dels by 2 to 2 1/2 lbs each, carcass weight was 6 to 7 lbs roughly, all were roos.. I kept the hens and they lay very well and darker egg than a rock but not as dark as a Del, good sized lg eggs almost from the start...... I also had 1 cross with a BSL hen by accident and they are also very large at butcher.......... a bit harder to pluck though was the only down fall of them roo's....my del boys ranged 5 to 6 lbs same age 1 came in at 41/2.......we did 13 in Nov.

I am looking for Delaware hens, I want good quality and have had no luck in my area. Anyone know who has nice quality birds, adults preferred but I'll do chicks as well.
