Hello folks!

Cyn (speckledhen) has told you I got some eggs from her today (well, yesterday - it's late). I got them in the incubator and made a thread incase anyone wants to follow how it all goes. I suspect I will have extras, and I hate to truely "cull"... I will give a bird away before I kill it - unless of course it is needed for it's own good. We'll see how it goes and then I will know what extra birds I will have... that will be in that thread too. search "DELAWARES, Barred Rocks, & Orpingtons" (hint: it's under hatching and incubating)

Thanks again, Cyn! I can't wait to see what hatches!

I'm also going to try to get some new pictures tomarrow if everyone promises to not judge me by all the mud. I'll not lie. I'm going to take photos of my cleanest birds for now. I have never got a picture of 3 of my 4 Del roos. Two of which (Elvis' sons) have really good temperments, and not so great markings... I'm going to let you all judge them. They have no names yet. Someone will have to get voted off the island and until I know who... I'm not naming them. So stay tuned for that. I'll also try to get a photo of some of my hens, from different sources, and let you judge them. Some will be my breeding flock and some will be my "pet quality" flock. You'll be able to tell, right? (que jeopardy theme)

Cull doesn't necessarily mean to kill it. It just means you are removing it from your flock. It can be for many reasons .. such as not good enough to be in your breeder flock, or you may find yourself needing to cull due to not enough room for everyone (or downsizing).

Speaking of culling ... I am gonna have picture day. I have to make some cuts, as I am setting up the breeder pens. I have 2 Del roos that are terribly Columbian looking, so they will go first. Funny though, this has just really surfaced this past week or so. Those 2 are going to be in my freezer. I choose to do that, rather than to have someone use them as breeders. Besides, my freezer is empty.

My plan is to get pictures done in the next day or two, so you all can help me out!

You can sell them, give them away, or butcher them, or whatever.

TNChickenut- good! I like following hatches, since so far I have remained virtuous and NOT succumbed to 'bator fever and bought one of my own!

Kathy- I have two Columbian looking roos also, but I want to find a NONstewing home for them. (Just teasing you- actually I wish I had the fortitude to freeze them) Not for breeding, but they are super sweet so far, and thought perhaps someone would want them either for "pets" or perhaps to "improve" a mixed flock. . . .might they not pass on good egg laying abilities? This is the confusing part for me. . .

By the way, I heard a DEFINITE rooster kazoo last night - err err ROOO. Twice. My little chickens, all growed up!

And, my question of the day - the SOP does not mention skin color, just that legs are to be yellow. So is Delaware skin yellow or white?

I know. I just put in the " because I think more people say "cull" is to "kill". It seems easier than explaining it everytime. I have yet to kill a bird over quality... but I have sold some, given away some, and kept the most of them - which is expensive becuase I always have to build another coop and run! lol.

I know we all love Dellies alive, but I just ate a Dellie sandwich and it was very good.

Delaware used to be a broiler breed, no one should be afraid or ashamed to eat them (except the ones who used the mind control and became pets that is)
