Yeah the skin color should be yellow

All the American class breeds should have yellow skin.

I'm working on my version of the Delaware breed creation to put over on the Delaware genetics thread later on seems to be a little confusion espcially with the genetist not laying out things in everday chicken talk. I'll try to give ya'll my dissolution of what I've gathered from them and reading how the breed originated. May take awhile as I'm not much on speech giving or writing as a matter of fact. My senior term paper was on chickens had some good stuff in there but just barely eeked by for a good enough grade for grauduating English IV as the teacher was hard to convince that was my best effort, anyway that was eons ago, it seems, and things surely havn't gotten better in time in that matter.

Wish I'd kept up with my notes and rough drafts on my term paper, as I might could spark up some old knowledge back in the storage compartment in my head. I've not been too kind to the ol' brain cells in the past and there's a lot of clouds that I have to peer through or even around sometimes

Don't you mean those who used mind control and made you their pet?

Speaking of which I must run offline for a bit...Thor is calling from the garage which means Cannonball and Fattie want something. LOL

Ike has been allowed to roam by himself today. He fights with Suede, then Dutch, then hangs around the gate to his own pen with his girls. He'll spend some more time in the broody pen to heal up before going back into the torture chamber.

I have a question for all you Delaware experts. I have that one Columbian looking roo out there that I know I need to cull. I have hens that came from the same setting of eggs he came from. They have 5 and 6 point combs, decent body type etc. and my other roo has a five point comb, good body type, yellow legs, good wing carriage, broad and everything I need. Genetics confuse the crap outta me, so I am wondering if you all think the good 5 point roo paired up with these girls would be worth working with. Will the Columbian look carry down to their offspring or will they have more barring due to the Roo? OR....should I just cull ALL the ones from that setting of eggs since I can tell from that Columbian looking roo that they have too much of the Columbian in them? I don't want to muck up Del genetics!! I want to get better and not take any steps back by using those hens. I am leaning toward culling, but dang it they just have nice combs and the body type I think would work out better in the next couple generations. The other stock I have is as good as I've seen around with a few exceptions from folks on here. They would be an excellent start, but only one bloodline.

I need some eggs to hatch...

I may just scrap them and try to get another good roo to go with the good hens and start hatching out the next generation and culling heavily to get what I am looking for. The ones I have already hatched are mixed from both roos and all hens, so NO TELLING what I will come up with from them. The Columbian looking roo has been seperated for a month now. I just need advice on the next step.

Here we go... more pictures!

Introducing to the world, for the first time, my boy Elvis' un-named sons. They are about 9 months old now.

And here is their father, Elvis:

Also, cindiloohoo made the point that she never seen any of my hens. This is because my hens are always filthy, really. I have got a picture of one of my hens that is young and lives in a small flock of i-don't-know-what-to-do-with birds. So, let me know what you would do with her....

nameless hen:

And another hen from my breeding flock... she might get moved. Everyone is moving! I'm building bigger coops and more of them, and everyone is getting seperated.

See, dirty. She is the sweetest bird, though.

So that is a little bit of everyone. Let me hear it!

Don't feel alone...my Dellies are always smeared with red clay and mud or baked squash and sweet potato orange.....seems they must wear their food too.

Elvis' sons look so different from each other don't they?

TNchickenut - if you want an opinion, I really like roo #1 better than his brother and his daddy-it looks like he has darker tail barring and a better wing set- but to tell the truth, I spent two hours outside with my Dels yesterday afternoon trying to get pictures of the 4 roos that are in the running, and I am cross-eyed. I will post this weekend after I sort them out. Buckshot may be taken over by my Roo#2- I asked DH for his opinion and he says unless Buckshot fills out more, the other roo is meatier. BUT they are only 12 weeks old, so time will tell.

One sweet thing- I got bone tired and sat down in the middle of them, and Janie and Eleanor almost immediately jumped on my lap and sat with me. Buckshot curled up against my back. It was a nice family gathering. Ultrasuede and my Roo2 got into it and Cora broke them up. I also noticed that Rejectible Roo #1 is the biggest, brightest looking and already appears to have the makings of a good barnyard roo. He looks out for those girls, and looks around for potential threats all the time.

Cynthia, as I recall from pics you posted a zillion years ago, you had a lot of smut on the backs of some of yours. And then it molted out, right? All my roos have a lot of smut, only one hen does. They have gone through a minor molt at 9-10 weeks. Will the spring molt take care of the smut if they are going to lose it?

I need to start taking NOTES in a notebook from this thread so I have a handy dandy quick Delaware guide at my finger tips.

Catdaddy- thanks for answering me about the yellow skin. I thought they were supposed to, but can't remember. Like I said, I need a notebook.

Cetawin- you would have been proud of Ultrasuede standing his ground yesterday- he isn't going to take poop from anyone. I will post a picture of him, too, so you can see how much he and Athena resemble each other.
