I was just going to say the same thing! Bacteria from your hands infecting them as well as the possibility of disturbing the contents are possibilities when handling them too much. Not a good thing. It is best to leave them be. I rarely candle until lock down.

Looks like by the end of the day, Isaac will be the new leader of the main flock. Dutch finally signed his death warrant today by flogging me, while I was on the phone with Ladyhawk.

His late great daddy, Hawkeye, would be so ashamed. If he hadn't slid on the floor or been slightly off-kilter with a roost support in the way as he was coming at me from behind (because he saw I was distracted talking on the phone), the raised welt on my leg would be a bleeding gash or he might have thrown me off-balance and made me fall. I saw him out of the corner of my eye running at me and turned and he hit me on the inner calf area, then he regained his footing and flew at me again. I swatted at him and he ran out the pop door.

It's something he has against me personally so I thought about rehoming him but Tom said he'll take him out and put a pellet in his brain and be done with it. So he is in the dog kennel on top of Zane's cage, awaiting execution. He was such a great rooster for so long. This will be the first time since I got Hawkeye in 2006 that I haven't had a BR rooster as main flock leader. I told Tom that he could stay even though he would bite me on occasion, but one flog and he would be gone. Today is that day, unfortunately.

Darn it! I had just said only a little while before this happened that I would have kept Levi if I didn't have Dutch, but that I really didn't need a 5th rooster. Oh, well, now the old ladies, and the Delaware girls, can have Isaac's coop and be rooster-free. I'll put Ivy, Lexie, Tux, Olivia, Sunny, Ginger, the Dels and maybe Nugget in there after she is off mama duty. It will hold 13 birds easily, so I won't be at capacity.

Oh no, Cyn! I am so sorry to hear that. I am glad you are okay! No room for a mean rooster, that is for sure. They are just not necessary, as they are so easy to come by. (I say, as I have 13 BR roosters growing out!)

I am just thankful that you are okay!

Be sure your viatmins are up in breeding hens, vitamin b2 deficiency (riboflavin) is leading cause of twisted toes in offspring, also genetics, and as stated above temps in bator. feeding bread a couple times a week to breeding hens takes care of riboflavin ..bread is fortified with b2, bigger birds need more..swine,poultry do not thrive without abundance of this vitamin. search google vitamin b2 -riboflavin,twisted toes.

I am so so sorry. I know it was not an easy decision to make for Tom because he loves Dutch but dang it, he sealed his own fate.

I am thankful he did not and yet also wishing he did do that while I was there, I would have wrung his neck without thinking twice or worse, hurt him to keep him away from you.

Poor stupid boy.

Ok, I will stop, that is what I needed, for someone to scold me. (I do wear gloves after washing my hands just like I do to turn them anyway) But I will only turn and check temps for the next week. I promise.

Cynthia, I am SO sorry Dutch hurt you, and equally glad it was not serious. Yes, he did seal his own fate, and I just want to SHAKE him and tell him how stupid he was to do that- he had it made at your house! Dutchie you big DOPE!!!

Would this mean you could keep Roosevelt? Or would it be better for those older girls to have a male free existence?

Cyn, you want me to bring Severus to you? No wattles or comb to mess with, good boy and beautimus? He is fine with everyone and everything except Cheyenne. LOL
