Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

It sounds like you had some good options - even if only one pullet was classic, one roo and one pullet can be a start! Lots of people cull seriously, down to keeping only 5-10% of a hatch, so it sounds like you could get somewhere.

I got my Delawares on a whim. Sandhill gave me a credit for a previous order. Their Delaware description sounded like they would be a good heritage meat bird, so I ordered them. They were fun to raise, but I put all but the largest roo & 4 hens in the freezer. I hope this is not offensive, but they taste wonderful. Then the remaining hens started laying huge brown eggs. Even my husband said I should have saved more of the hens. We both like them a lot! So, I'm now hoping that the hens will go broody, so I can increase my flock. Jeremy, I really would like some chicks out of that hen. Is that possible? You are not that far away.

Cute chickens and description, X2Farm.

Nicole...
I missed your pictures! Well, I see alot of dark on some of them, yet the one female is very light! What a variety, huh? What is their size? I am anxious to see how they look when grown. Glad to hear they have the typical Delaware personality! Gotta love that!

There is a huge variety in color... very strange! But there seems to be consistency as far as type

They aren't huge, but they are still young. The boys are ALLLLL legs

I'll see if I can get pictures of em next to something for size comparison. With the nice weather, its dry enough for good pictures!

Snuggles, the carport boy, crows for me

He already seranaded me this morning, until I came out and spoiled him for a bit.

Two of the girls have nice a shape tails, fairly wide, no pinch, same for a few of the boys. There's two boys with almost perfect barring, not to dark or light.

I'll definetly see about the pictures so you can get a better idea

Calling all experts!! Is this a Dellie hen?? If so, how does she look? I am just starting on what to look for and have a LOT of learning to do.

Where in NC are you? I am west of Asheville- nice to know there are more Dellie people in my state!

I am not sure if that is a pure Del or not - the comb is larger than I have seen on a Del hen so far in my experience, and the hackle and tail markings are not totally correct, but she could be a cross.
If you want to see pictures of good markings, and some of the description from the Standard of Perfection, you could check with the Delaware Poultry club site - you can't get in all the areas without being a member, but you should be able to see the Schilling Illustrations, which were taken from life, and are considered about the best out there.
The hackle feather should be irregularly barred, and on the females, the main tail feathers should be black with white edging. You girl has too much of a Columbian look in the hackles. How old is she? Sometimes they will grow in better tail feathers after a first molt, but I am not sure the hackle markings will change.

Hi!!

I am in Browns Summit just over the Greensboro Border. This is a hen that I adopted yesterday, so no idea how old she is. She lays a nice brown egg and is SUPER friendly. She is currently in quarantine along with an OEG that I adopted with her. I though she might be a Del or a Del cross. Just wanted everyone's opinion what she might be. I don't know enough about the breed to pick out all the correct traits. Thanks!

And here all this time I have been wondering what sort of chicken was given to me and know I know!

They're very heavy chicken but very skiddish, also boys and raised by broody which I hear can make them a little wild. Either way they are a welcome addition to my feathered family.
