Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Oh No! Stay safe and if you need anything maybe we can get a caravan going and bring it to you.

How are the Dellies holding up (to stay on topic) ?

I haven't gone out to the coops-Tom won't let me. He has hurt his back and has a pinched nerve, so he isn't in much shape to do it, either, but everyone has food and water. Just have to be sure that little Shadow isn't being kept away from it while they're locked inside. I made a giant pancake with wheat germ and blackberries--it fills one of those huge ceramic Applebee's plates we bought at the flea market. Will take that to the Delawares so maybe they'll be entertained and won't pick at Ike's comb and wattles all day long. They are a group that needs to have "activities" or they get into trouble, LOL.

Cynthia, glad you have electricity! It has lightened up here, although some little somethings are still coming down. The Dels were all at the door this morning - I think if I had moved, they would have jumped out into the snow. Since the sillies don't really know what it is yet, that may have been quite the surprise for them- I might be tempted to let them try it, but it's windy, and the snow is just deep enough to make me wonder if they would flounder around too much- besides, what if I lose one in all that white???

Forgot to say to Karen thank - you for the caravan thought! I so appreciate that there are friends who will bail me out of trouble if I need them.

I think we are fine here, though, unless Tom falls out there and I have to call an ambulance.

We are going to watch Food, Inc. today and I have a quilt I'm working on, too.

Good morning delaware friends!

So I found somebody who breeds Dells in my area, he had posted hatching eggs for sale on craigslist. I thought that this was great! He's located in the Napa County area so pick up/delivery would be a breeze. I sent him an email letting him know how interested I was in purchasing at least a dozen of his eggs, but I had a few questions first.

-are your birds considered heritage?
-whose lines/which breeder did you get them from (if you don't mind me asking, or if he knows.)
-and if he had any pictures of the mature birds so that I can make a final decision.

I thought these were pretty basic questions, especially since he's asking $36 a dozen... however, the response I got back was less than I was hoping for.

"I'm in napa. let me know when you want your eggs. All the chicks look alike. & thanks"

That's it.

I'm wondering if I should push for more info, or just take this as a sign that these birds might not necessarily be the ones that I want. Any advice?

OH, this weather! I'm guessing we got around 8 inches of fluffy white! It's a mess. We have not yet got out of the driveway. We have had no internet service, until now. And, that keeps coming and going.

It took me hours to do chores! All the babies in the brooders are fine. They don't go outside anyway, and they are nice and warm.

The bigger Dels (Halloween hatch) are in their own pen, inside the breeder barn now. They run for the door each time I come in. I let them out, to wander about the building, so they are happy. Their pen is large, but I like them to be able to run around more, and so do they! Since all the pens are not finished, there is 1/2 the building they can run around in. For the first time, today I saw 2 of the roos face off. They were both determined, but a little pullet happened to bump into one of them, and they quit their silliness.

Sorry you are leaving OR. Cetwin. We need more chicken people. I have lived in OR on and off for about 30+ years and it has been good. I had never been in the South before but took a job there in "94" in GA near the Alabama border. I loved it working with families there and could go back easily.

I'm still interested in finding some heritage Delawares from someplace. Has anyone dealt with Sand Hill Preservation. They appear to have above grade hatercy birds but I don't know if I want to start with 25 min. and they are sold out until mid summer.

Jeremy- ever hear the saying "buyer beware"? I have always felt that if the seller could not or would not answer basic questions, and yours certainly were basic and not offensive as far as my thinking goes, then I would be exceedingly cautious. I personally would not buy without a better response.
ESPECIALLY in this case, pictures would be of utmost importance so you could see what you might get, i.e. do the parent birds have Columbian markings instead of barring, etc. IF you can trust the pictures. I sound like a suspicious old woman, but there are people out there willing to take your money and run. I would ask more questions. Ask the same questions again. If I didn't get a better response, I would look elsewhere. Good Luck!

Kathy, it's heartwarming when they all run toward you, isn't it? Those little roo face offs are funny so far; I just hope they don't hurt each other. I love every one of these little buggers. Even the two possible culls are sweet, friendly guys and dear to my heart -

I think I am at about 8 inches also- I am sick of shoveling, I can say that!!!

Vexor, I really wish I could help - I guess all I can say is keep looking and asking - someone somewhere has to have some for you!

Geez, Jeremy, doesn't sound like he has anything other than hatchery Delawares or knows nothing about the breed at all. For that price, I think I'd skip those. Dang, I don't even charge that much per dozen and I probably could. Just want them to still be affordable for folks so the breed and knowledge of what it should be can spread.

Sandhill has decent Dels, I've been told. Mine are a mix of Meier, McDaniel with some Sandhill bred in for diversity, if I recall.

Just watched Food, Inc. It's a must-see, for sure.

Well....we dodged the bullet down here. Nothing more than an all night COLD soaking rain. Still a light, drizzly, COLD rain here right now.

Noon ended Day 19 for my BBS Rock and 3 Del eggs. Everything looked good when I stopped them turning Fri morning. I am expecting little Del pips by tomorrow. Probably from the BBS too as I think they hatched a little early too if I remember right.

Never did get my wine last night. We have some of our friends kids for the night tonight...so I think wine will be in good order later (LOL)

Stay warm my Dellie friends....
