Yes, I agree. The time they start to feather out their tail feathers give them the power to fly a bit is the best. They are ill behaved and curious about everything. That is definately the best time. Speaking of... I have a brood of bantam barnevelders + 1 wheaten penedesenca right now that are just about to that point. After dealing with Delawares so long, you forget how slow other breeds can be. Speaking of the 1 WP... anyone have any experience with wheaten penedesencas? I want to know if it is a cockrel or pullet. (*fingers crossed* please be a pullet, please be a pullet) I'll go take a picture and put up a thread about it... PM me if you have some clue about this breed.

I'll tell you in a few days how they taste. We just down sized today. Sold off 6 pullets and culled 2 roos. The first roo was the nasty attitude, not so great looking boy from PA. My daughter nicknamed him "Nemesis." Every time she would enter the pen he would follow her as if to say "get out." And he pecked her out of aggression, and me and my husband. Today was one peck too many and when my husband grabbed him to say "enough" that roo was headed into fight-mode. My husband grabbed him before that roo could do any harm, but that roo was ready to start trouble for sure! Revenge is a dish best served cold, but this time I wonder how it will taste hot with gravy and stuffing?

If those girls don't quit picking on Ike, even I (I can't believe I am saying this!!!) might march over to Cyn's with my crock pot!

I know this sounds sappy, and again maybe I am just terribly overtired, but I never ever thought chickens would be THIS cool. It's way beyond any thought I had - and I cannot believe how attached I am. Even DH, who is terrified he will crunch them all with his size 13's, was entranced yesterday, and very smug about Ultrasuede showing him preference.

It does not sound sappy at all. I completely understand. I ordered my first 6 girls because I wanted fresh eggs and chickens are neat. I truly had no idea how much I would love them, enjoy them and have fun with them....I would kill someone or something over my babies. I would start a war over Thor and several others. How can you not love them and get attached? They give you trust, affection and laughs...they each have their own personality and disposition. No two are alike really. People may think we're all crazy, but Delaware chicks just seem to be into everything, more curious and brave, than any other chicks I've raised. The closest to them would have to be the Barred Rocks, I think, and really, that makes sense because they have BR heritage.

Poor sweet, good-natured Isaac is in the broody pen tonight again. We got him out when they began going after his wattles and comb, but I see there is blood on Phoebe and on Riley, but no wounds on them, so it had to come from Ike.

He may be inside for days because the rain has started, but in the broody pen is better than being locked in with cannibal women!

If I didn't want purebred Dels, I'd throw Ellie and Georgie in with Suede for an afternoon. That'd teach 'em.
