I would not recommend a hatchery. Do you incubate and hatch? There are some here that would sell you eggs, I think!

Jluetkemeyer- welcome to Dellie world- I would get them from a breeder, too- although it seems lots of people like their hatchery birds- chksontherun got a real cutie from McMurry. If you want to breed them, and help improve the breed, etc., then getting birds from a breeder would put you steps ahead.

Cindiloo- give him a lot of room to run around a chase hens and bugs and limit his intake if at all possible. If he has a good personality and you need a layer flock roo, that might work. Otherwise, having eaten one of my own Dels now ( is their an "I ate my own Del" club?) I would say, roast him!

Kathy, well, the little stinkers. I gave Silk and Satin a little chopped green grape this morning, and they are still, as a far as I know, sitting and debating whether I have poisoned it or not. Desiree, Katia and Valentina ( I know, I know, I can hear everyone groaning) had a few moments in the run yesterday- I made them a mini run for the first few days, as I think they could get very lost in their regular run until they know me better- I don't want to have to chase them down! They have the most beautiful eyes- Desiree (the blue) has eyes that match her feathers - do they turn dark later? I have never seen a gray eyed chicken!

Scott- tell that boy congratulations! That will be the best turkey you'll ever eat, too.

cindyloohoo, can you help me understand. By saying he is not good for breeding, does that mean his confirmation is not good. And a s a good roo for laying flock, does that mean he is agressive and ready to defend his territory, or just an ok bird.
Since I am new to chickens, just trying to understand the language.

Cindi, depends on how much room you have for him, I'd think. If he's already fattened up with corn, might be a good thing to process him. If he has great conformation, it'd be worth putting him on a proper diet.

We waited and waited and waited for her to go over the edge so I could put some Orp eggs under her for you. Now that you don't need me to do that, she is sticking to the nest. She crawled in there last night as the others were going to roost and she's still on there this morning, acting like a vicious dog. Ladyhawk, so what eggs would you like me to put under her so you can take back some birds when you come visit?

I usually buy all my birds from breeders and prefer to do so. I do incubate and hatch. I have gotten several batches of buckeye eggs and had success. My bator will be tied up through the later part of May. If anyone has eggs for sell let me know.

If you would be interested after that, I am sure someone here could fix you up with eggs!

I intend to hatch and sell chicks, but am unsure when I will begin that venture. I do have shipping boxes, and plan to ship as well. Mostly, I am waiting for my # 1 roo to grow out for breeding. I won't sell before that.​

I culled for confirmation in my Del flock yesterday from all my recent hatches and took them to the market. People went crazy over the Del's and I sold out in an hour and a half with 14 birds. I still have a long way to go! Lots more culls as they grow out more. Sold out of Coturnix too...Thank GOD! LOL! Those things were getting annoying.

He's a long legged 7 point comb boy with an attitude right now. They finally quit all the crowing. He tried to beat up my tom turkey out on the range...idiot got the smackdown. Figured they'd be okay with all the room out there but he went right for them. He got over excited and his comb started turning black almost instantly...kinda worried me so we caged him last night for his own sake. I thought he was gonna have a heart attack and drop dead right there! Probably gonna wind up eating him I imagine. Giving him a bit longer to see if he calms down any.

Does anyone have Delaware chicks or eggs near South Jersey? My boys are in 4-H and I think Delawares would be great for them to show. No one here has any that I know of. Just worried about paying alot for eggs that may not hatch. My DS has done some incubating with duck eggs and some chicken eggs and so far has been pretty successful. Definitely hoping to get some from a breeder and not a hatchery. Thanks in advance.
