Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

So I candled the eggs that I received from Tori (Mrs. AK-Bird-Braind) tonight... out of the 15 that she sent, 12 Delaware and 3 BBS Orpingtons, only 1 of the Orps is showing development, the other 2 have visible bloodrings. First bummer.

The second, and hardest hitting upset not a single Delaware is showing any sort of development. I'm completely at a loss for words. When I did a quick candle of only a couple eggs a few weeks back I could have swore I saw veins developing, apparently I was wrong? I don't understand how almost every single egg did not develop? I counted 4 Delawares that had bloodrings, so maybe they at least tried to grow? I'm not 100% what a bloodring means, I'm still very new at incubating. Most of the eggs though looked absolutely clear. The light literally shone right through them. In some there was a bubble, that when I tilted the eggs around would move to the top most part of the egg.

I'm feeling very down at the moment about my hopes of starting my own Delaware breeding flock.

I don't understand what I'm doing wrong with this breed during incubation? The Ameraucanas that I hatched from pips&peeps did well for shipped eggs (11 out of 17) so I don't think it's my incubation methods. Maybe it was hard shipping on the eggs, they did come all the way from Alaska? Day 18 is just around the corner now... I didn't take any eggs out in hopes that one of them might still grow. I'm going to candle again before I put them (if there are any) into lockdown. I'm very disappointed and depressed doesn't even begin to describe how I feel.

All I can hope is that the 17 Bill Braden Del eggs that I put in on May 1st look more promising when I candle them next week, they're on day 5.

Needless to say I spent about an hour today in the brooder with Stewart and the other Del babies I hatched from Cynthia's eggs. They're all growing so fast. They're getting to be as big as the hatchery chicks that I ordered. The hatchery babies were born on March 19th, so they're about 10 days older than the Dels. But Stewart and the others are already the same height and are catching up in bulk very quickly. They're also my sweetest chicks. They don't hesitate one bit when I open the brooder door to go inside, they always run right up and start looking up at me. At this point I'm pretty sure 4 out of the 5 chicks are boys. Stewart, 2 unnamed little guys and the chick with the feet problems. They all have pronounced combs that are turning pink, and are much bigger than the 5th chick. "Quasimodo" was the chick that I had to help hatch, that has always been the smallest, well "Quasimodo" I'm pretty sure is "Quasimota"! L0L. Her comb isn't developing at all and she's less inquisitive than the others. She also isn't sparring with the other little guys at all. Just think, if I hadn't of intervened and helped her out of her egg I would've had a brooder full of Del boys! A friend of mine was over when I helped Quasi hatch and she's very into film, she had a portable camera corder on her and we caught almost the entire hatch on camera. I've been meaning to get it uploaded somewhere, I'll have to email her and see if she can send me the file. I feel very fortunate to have these babies.

Cetawin, I say take that iPod away and put it in the darkest corner you can find in your house. Also, take the cord that's used to charge the thing just in case she is able to locate where you've hidden it, that way eventually the power would run out and it will be no use anyways. Children are too technologically dependent these days, why can't they just go outside and play in the dirt? Your the mom, you make the rules. Kids have got to learn that at a young age or it'll only be a bigger battle as they get older.

Hope everyone has a good night, I'm going to try to get some pictures up of Stewart and the gang this weekend- it's suppose to be bright and sunny. I do love California weather.

Yee Haw! You are gonna love that one! Big and beautiful! I love my copper necked blue beauty!

Jeremy, I am so sorry about your Delaware eggs. Darn it! Wish I could say something to make it all better. It will just take a little more time to have your flock, that's all. I know I hate the wait, too! Good luck with your other eggs and hatch!

Yard full o' rocks :

Morning all....

Seems to be "the season" here as well. There was a black rock girl in the nest box at bedtime last night and she is STILL there this morning. I just let the others out to free range to "tempt" her but she is sitting tight. Guess I need to rush up getting a broody pen finished. Fortunately I started one on a whim this past weekend.

Beth, I'm fighting the "shell-less egg syndrome" here as well. I wonder if it could be a genetic thing like the dwarf chick issue. I've gone from getting a "soft shelled" egg to getting an egg with no shell at all. Oh well....whoever it is still appears healthy so I guess I'm not gonna stress

Off to see a few customers

Y'all have a great day

Good morning Scott, 6 more days left.!!!! Yeh.

I won't be around today. I have to have a tooth cut out. Yuck.

Even with that I am so excited. Yes get that broodie area ready. I had to put up a sheet to keep other hens from even getting within sight of mine. She was very ill toward them, if she could see them. She was already seperated by 1/2 inch hardware cloth but I wanted her to be undisturbed. Poor girls they are so hormunally challenged. LOL I can't spell this morning either.

I have a meg baby girl and she is hugh and beautiful.

So sorry Jeremy. I am waiting on mine right now. I do not candle.

Gloria Jean, I thought I was the only one that doesn't candle!

Well, I do candle at lockdown, before moving the eggs from the incubator into the hatcher. Usually that is all though.

My 2 broodies are doing great so far. That may change when I move them today though (I hope not). I am having to do alot of rearranging ..... and those 2 girls are just gonna have to move! I have the incubator ready for eggs, in case they change their minds.

Bummer, Jeremy! A blood ring means that the embryo died and the blood left the veins to pool in a ring, so those were definitely fertile and did start to develop to a point. I know that sometimes BBS Orp eggs seem hard to ship so I'm not surprised there. Could be that the P.O. just shook the eggs up so badly that the development just didnt begin on most of them.

Gloria Jean, since Misty is Smoky's daughter, it proves the broody "gene" is in there. Smoky's sister Dusty raised two batches of chicks last year, back to back, but Smoky herself hasn't been broody yet.

Morning everyone

I moved my first broody last night (one of my black rock girls). I built a small breeding pen and modified it for a "broody pen". I put her in there over 10 eggs last night and she is perfectly content this morning. 4 eggs were from my Del pen so it will be neat to see "the next generation".

Hope everyone is well...gonna be hot here today, they're talking about 90 degrees. Boy, I was ready for winter to end, but I don't think I'm really looking forward to Summer all that much

Good morning, everyone!

I just wanted to pop in and say "hello" to all my fellow Del-lovers. I've been super busy with hatching, but I do try to stay caught up on all the Delaware events going on in this thread.

I thought I'd throw in a couple of pics of my first cockerel and pullet "children" from my Del roo "Prince". My first incubation, I only set 4 eggs to test fertility, and all 4 hatched...but these 2 are the ones I've chosen to keep from that hatch. But I've got lots of little white fluffies growing out, so only time will tell. Oh this waiting game is tedious...but so worth it. It's so fun to watch them develop. I believe this little roo, along with a nice one I hatched from Jesse McDaniel, are going to be my new flock leaders. Sorry for the roo's pic with his tail down...it was quite a cold morning when I took that pic...I guess he was protecting his bum from the wind.

The very last pic is of 1 of my Jesse McDaniel cockerels. It's going to be SO HARD to sell any of those Dels...I just love them all.

Cynthia...if you can make out any of their qualities (particulary body type) from the pics, I'd love your critique of these youngsters.

Jeremy- I am SO sorry- but don't give up on your flock!!! It just may take longer to get it. From what everyone is saying, it sounds like the PO played football with the box, and you did everything correctly.

All of you with broodies!!!!!!

I hope I get one next year.

My Dels have dug three holes to China under the coop- one is so deep you can't see them when they are in it until you get right up there- I think I need to plant a tree outside the southwest corner of the run-

Have a good day, everyone - I am at work earning chicken feed money!

ETA: Shellyb- LOOK at the LEGS on that last boy!!! What a chunker!!!!!
