Hhmmmm, now that is odd. I think my broody girls ate ok when they brought the babies out. I guess I didn't pay real close attention. I did notice that they looked like they gained weight back from the loss of sitting. I just assumed they were eating ok. Did she eat ok while she was sitting?

Kathy, she ate whatever I put in front of her, and in the beginning, at least, she got off the nest during the hottest part of the day and went out on the lawn for a while. Toward the end, she didn't eat much, but I thought that might be her personal "lock down", so to speak. I am going to try to move them tomorrow- She is not much of a one to be picked up, so this ought to be interesting. I have noted that the babies spill a lot of the feed all over, and it is usually cleaned up- and it's a lot of feed, so maybe she is "scratching" in the hay for that feed when I am not there? It's the fact that there are not adult size poops that is worrying me.

She is SO good about letting the babies have first dibs at anything I put down- she is SUCH a sweet mommy.


Serrin, that might possible be the beautiful and haughty Athena, Thor's sister, who is too good for all of us, and I am very surprised she would stoop to drink out of the duck pool.

Beth you are correct! Serrin, that is the "I'm too good for you" blue orp, Athena, she is Thor's full sister. She free ranges every day and the sun has basically bleached her to a dark grey/light grey. See if she were a brunette, it would have brought out the red undertones

Beth, you need to get her eating...boot her butt off that nest and get her out and about with youngsters if need be. We need to ask Cyn for sure...I think Panda is doing the same or similar.

We take mine off the nest once daily and don't let them go back till they eat, drink and poop. They can kill themselves, these first-timers. Had to take Panda out and put her on the ground--she won't walk around with the babies and I haven't seen them drink or her, for that matter. Harriet has to get her legs working again and get some nutrition and water, especially in this heat.

Well, Harriet and chicks both are getting out today- I just have to put the hinges on the gate and figure out how to safely transport them- I am not sure I can stuff her in the carrier.. . .
