Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

Ok I have to ask. Indian Rivers were the original name of the Delaware so is there some particular reason Lots o paints is calling hers Indian Rivers? I mean is she starting with the Barred rock and NHR crossing?

One other question. If Sand Hill sold out for 2011 what does that mean? I mean their chicks are $5 average, so did they sell to a private person or another hatchery? or do they not hatch that many?

Another thing, for those who got snow down south. We are due to get a storm to drop 6-12 this weekend I think. Should a prayed harder. Gotta snow blow before I can to anywhere today. Just great! Good week end to stay inside and knit or crochet.

Love ya all stay warm

Rancher

I waited 11 months for my Sand Hill Del's I ordered 25 and they shipped 26 but I have to say they are big birds.

Well I can't call them Delawares.....but they look just like them can't call them sex links because they aren't I found good ole Cackle selling them as Indian Rivers no real confusion there as Indian River is a old name for Delawares so other than leg bands I can't tell them apart so I'm being a copy cat I'm calling them Indian Rivers......

Lotsa - I think that is a fine name. It is what I am considering calling my project birds, too, so maybe we need to sort that out some time in the future -

If you cross a barred rock and a new Hampshire or RIR hen, do all of the chicks come out looking like Delawares or only a percentage?

I read somewhere that if you crossed Delaware roo & NH or RIR they would keep the Delaware color as well. Has anyone tried that?

That's what I'm doing I crossed my Del over the NH hens the chicks look just like Dels and act like them too.....I think 1 in 20 look like Dels crossing Barred Rocks with New Hampshires Kathy is working on that one...I only volunteered to hatch out some it will take some hatching to get there but I now believe that it's the way to go to get the barn built......

Lotsa, do you know of it would work with RIR hens?
Sounds like Kathy has a long term project, 1 in 20 will take awhile.

I don't know anybody who has tried it but I don't have any RIR's it sure worked on the NH they look just like Dels maybe the RIR cross will be a different body shape if you have RIR try it they should lay lots of eggs and process well what's the harm? I did it for hybrid vigor they are doing great oldest ones were hatched 12/25

Actually, I hope not to get any Delawares with my first cross. If the 3 genetics experts are correct, I should get 100% barred this first cross. That should prove that my Barred Rocks and my New Hampshires are pure. So far, that is correct. I have a dozen now. It will take 3 generations to complete this project.

yes you get the same results crossing the Delaware male over Rhode Island red females(RIR, NH, Prod. red) all are considered Black- tailed Red or Red Columbian feather pattern, the male and female offspring will all have the Delaware feather color and pattern(dilluted barring) some may have a little red leakage or brassiness in the neck and back feathers. Hope that helps out some.
