Show off your Delawares! *PIC HEAVY*

OMG those Ducks are so awsum.............. I have never seen ducks that color nor have I heard of that breed anywhere around here. They are magnificent!!! I bet you'll win everything with those.
I also love the Dels, absolutely gorgeous. I love my girls no matter what and they aren't show quality by any long stretches....... They are though very smart, friendly, and curious. Much more so than most of my other pullets were, the minute they here my patio door slide they come running squawking their pretty little heads off, cuz mom always has treats for nice chickies...hehehe, usually kale or apples or banana's. They eat everything too, not picky about treats if I have it in a bowl even better. LOL
Wish I was closer to that show I would love to go see all the beautiful birds.
TY for the info on the pinched tails, mine definitely have them, it also makes them harder to tell apart because I can't see much of the tail from the side, right now I can only tell them apart if I can see their combs, SmartyPants has a smaller comb than Freckles, but freckles seems to have a bit more color on her neck feathers. She is also showing some buff colored bleed threw that's almost looks like dirt, but isn't. AW well at this time I'm not yet set up to try to better the breed anyway, but someday I would love to raise these beautiful Chickens. They along with my SS pullets and Peaches my 1` and only BR are my absolute favorite breeds friendliest too, The Delawares though are my personal favorite if they have the color and characteristics there suppose too have even better.
TY all again for the info, and still wondering what causes the pinched tail and color bleed thru...though...? inbreeding? cross outs? or what. has some always shown up with it? or has it been a more recent trait coming out. Is it only in the hatchery stock? or do good breeders find it too? I know I ask to many questions LOL lucky you ain't my hubby, I drive him crazy with questions, I always need to know WHY hehehe........TY again KIm

Learned something I didn't know I didn't know about "pinched" tails, too.

I wish he would have kept that BR- since he got more than one sport out of that bunch of eggs, that roo definitely had something genetically going on that would have been extremely useful to experiment with. I wonder if he remembers who he sold him to - or did he end up as dinner?

I know!

Ever since Mrs. Kathy posted that info last year I've been wandering the same thing and I bet he's regretting that move now, esp. if he cannot locate him. IDK but it sure got my interests all sparked up at the time and still does when brought back up ever now and again. I just wonder if he remembers what the supposedly sire of that Del. type pullet was a cross of, if I remember correctly Mrs. Kathy stated that Doug was thinking that it was not a pure Barred Rock male and wonder if he knows what might have been in his genetic background?

I'm gonna try and get some pics of my F1 crosses that I ended up with out my trails and errors to move forward in creating a "delaware patterned" bird out of X-breeding, may not be today but here shortly as I'm so busy now esp. since the weather has cooled down an (inth) of a degree here. Seems like Fall every now and again then furnace blazing hot the next time you go out, its crazy weather here for sure.

I'm trying to get breeding pens built for the projects and rearranging, getting ready to start culling and rooster processing (DOWNSIZING) and hoping to get my Delaware project under way soon. I just know those girls are laying now but I have them all combined with my Pro-red, BSL, and Delaware pullets in the pullet growout pen, so I'm gonna get them their own pen set up for better observation and a little special TLC, right

BTW I did'nt get a response from Mrs. Kathy about that being Dale in the video, so I reckon not, huh? she's gonna make me come all the way up there to MO to pick Dale out personally I guess?

He got the Delaware pullet from crossing a Barred Rock male to a New Hampshire female. He hatched about a dozen eggs and got 4 or 5 Delaware looking chicks. He kept only the 2 female Delawares.

thanks Kathy, now I remember, it has been a while..and I just learned a valuable lesson from this discussion, about the pinched tail..it now makes perfect sence to me, and that is why my aussies didnt pan out this year..had some decent hens but after the illustrations above their tails are pinched too much and even thou the rooster has near p[erfect tail, that doesnt translate into perfect tails on offspring..high percentage of pinched tails in offspring..hopefully this will be a better year in 2012. I remember Walt talking about it befor but the illustrations and examples helped a lot.

me too..wonder what he did with that group..Wish he would have held onto them.didnt you get a couple of the offspring from him? or part of that flock? when i talked to him he said that maybe it was you that got a few german new hampshires from that group? he called them german..not sure what that meant, did the germans work on them for show?
I had origionally contacted him about aussies it was quite a while ago..and showed an interest in whatever he was doing with the dels and he said he had sold aussies but had a number of the flock he had been working on if i wanted some of those..you snooze you loose, I was too focused on the latter.

Aveca,
Kathy got some of the German stock from him, and I got some from her - they are about 21 weeks old now, I think. I tried buying that Del pullet at Ohio, he just would not sell her to me.
